Windows XP 64 bit

I heard windows XP 64 bit is releasing in a couple of days... So I have AMD 64 with 32bit windows XP pro *Legal Version* and will there be any upgrade or something?

If you mean a free upgrade, highly doubtful. It would cut into Microsoft's profits.

Usually Microsoft offers a new OS upgrade, however if you have ever upgraded a system that has been running for a while, previos upgrades have proved to have many undesirable effects on many different machines(its basicly opening a can of worms) unless this has somehow been fixed (and i doubt that). If you do get the lower price upgrade, to be on the safe side i would format your boot drive install a clean copy of XP then install the XP 64 upgrade. This method has worked well for several generations of windows. Also there maybe some driver issues involved with this release, so make sure you have all the latest drivers on a backup cd etc, before you format or upgrade your system.
I have a copy of XP64 but no hardware to run it on yet...

With an upgrade, you can do a full install from scratch, you just have to put the cd from the previous OS in for verification of ownership.

I have the 64 bit release copy, but I have not tried to upgrade from my 32 bit because of driver issues. Most of the 3rd party hardware companies have not released any 64 bit drivers yet. I know my sound card and tv tuner could will no longer work. I am going to hold off.

the big surprise is that Microsoft will offer users, who own a PC with a 64-bit processor and run the 32-bit Windows XP Pro, a free upgrade from the old to the new software. According to product manager Brian Marr, users will just have to pay for shipping and handling.

hmm I have a legal copy of Retail Windows XP pro and it says COA/PID Is invalid... Sent them an email..

Nothing is free with Windows... if Microsoft is involved lol. Are you sure about the free upgrade? I seem to recall there being NO type of upgrade options available... well that was originally what I had heard. w/e I could be mistaken.

Free upgrade ($12 shipping) is available to people who purchased a system with a 64-bit processor (AMD or Intel) WITH XP Pro pre-installed (XP Home is not eligible) between 3/31/2003 and 7/31/2005.

Once you *order* the 64-bit version, you are no longer licensed for the 32-bit, so I wouldn't recommend just arbitrarily swapping. There is very little driver support from vendors at the moment, so you most likely WILL have a hard time finding everything you need (or you'll need to wait a few months for your HW vendors to catch up).

I'd say unless you have a very specific need for a 64 bit OS, you should give this at LEAST 3-6 months for drivers to catch up.
