FCC Eases High-Speed Internet Rules

FCC Eases High-Speed Internet Rules
By REBECCA CARROLL, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Federal regulators on Friday eased rules governing high-speed Internet services offered by phone companies, saying they hope it will speed Internet growth.

The Federal Communications Commission's 4-0 vote means that phone companies delivering Internet access via digital subscriber lines, or DSL, eventually will no longer have to lease access to their networks to competitors at deep discounts.

The decision is a political win for new Chairman Kevin Martin, a Republican, who has made broadband growth his top priority. Martin had delayed the agency's monthly meeting on Thursday by a day to continue negotiations with fellow commissioners on the issue. The commission has an open seat and is split between two Republicans and two Democrats.

The decision follows a Supreme Court ruling in June that upheld the FCC's authority to free cable companies offering broadband from the same regulations that phone companies have faced.

The telephone industry argued that the court's decision put it at a competitive disadvantage and that it should be treated the same as the cable companies.

Hopefully that wont happen...

Locally, here in Indy, the SBC is already the "phone company" that provides all of our services and pretty much nobody else provides reliable DSL here.

If they were gonna screw us... I'd think that they'd have already done so by now. (Plus, if they go up TOO much, we'll all jump ship and go back to cable broadband.)

SBC services out here too. Still I stick with Earthlink. Competition is what's keeping SBC's prices down. Some people don't have cable TV.

But that's the thing... here in the midwest, SBC don't have any competition.

They pretty much are a monopoly here.

It could be nation wide pricing that's keeping your price down... or you might be right with DSL keeping them in check.

How many cable company's offer high speed cable? 1? 2?

All they have to do is put there price on level with cable (let's say $50). So now you have 3 choices, all offer about the same thing, for $50. You're ****ed with no ky.

Are you kidding?

In my area alone there are 3: Adelphia, Comcast, and Cox. There have to be more nationally.

BTW, I consistently hit 6-7 mbps with my cable modem. No DSL for me...

But here's the thing... the cable companies are touting 5Mbps+ broadband for that $50... if DSL doesn't match the speed and tries to go up to $50... then we still jump ship.

More or less... if they want to keep selling 1.5 Mbps connections for under $20 per month and 3 Mbps connections for under $30 per month then they'd better leave the pricing alone.

Either way... there is still competition out there, therefore I don't really know if this news is gonna drastically effect us one way or another.

For the general public, price is a concern. For the FCC, they want to increase the availability of high-speed/high-bandwidth services.

We in the US like to think we are the most internet savvy folks, but I've spent some time in South Korea over the past 4 years and was surprised to read that they have the highest penetration of high-speed service in the world. More than 75% of the public there has high-speed service.

Yeah, I saw a stat somewhere that the US is actually about 8 or 10th in the world for high speed distribution.

I think the reason for this is the high number of different companies competing to get the saturation, but even more so the sheer amount of land that has to be covered. That's part of the reason we have crappy cell coverage as well - too dang much ground to cover.

Actually the US ranks 16th in the world for broadband per capita. US broadband services suck and cost too much.
