load testing tools

does anyone have experience with a good load testing tool to test a webserver/webapp that they can recommend?

we need to make sure the server can handle up to 100,000 concurrent users.
hopefully the tool is inexpensive.

need to finish testing by friday.

thanks for your help in advance.

i dunno if you're using windows or not, but if you use Visual studio for development, they bundle a tool for doing testing of websites called Application Center Test.

it's kinda sucky, but it will do what you need.

if you don't use vis studio...not sure. sorry.

thanks attgig, but we don't have visual studio. we're now evaluating between commercial products and open source ones. Loadrunner from Mercury, JMeter, openSTA ... the last two may not handle the 100k concurrent simulation ...

mcs328, yeah, we're looking into how much Loadrunner will cost us. if it's reasonable, we may go with that.

what's your experience with Loadrunner?

None actually...I know we used it for testing a web application but that was 5 years ago and I was just a college grad peon who wasn't allowed to touch anything.

All you have to do is post an article on SlashDot linking to your server and watch it melt as everybody tries to access it.
