Google planning IM service, report says

Google planning IM service, report says
Published: August 23, 2005, 5:44 AM PDT
By Reuters

Google is set to introduce its own instant-messaging system, the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday. Such a move would mark an expansion by the Web search leader into text and also voice communications.

Citing unnamed sources "familiar with the service," the Los Angeles Times said that Google's instant-messaging program would be called Google Talk and could be launched as early as Wednesday.

Google Talk goes beyond text-based instant messaging using a computer keyboard to let users hold voice conversations with other computer users, the newspaper quoted a source as saying.

Free software seems to move the search giant further into Microsoft and Yahoo territory.A Google representative declined to comment on the company's product plans. Rumors also circulated last year that the search giant was planning such a move.

If confirmed, the combined computer text and voice-calling service would put Google in competition with a similar service pioneered by Skype, which has attracted tens of millions of users, especially in Europe.

Separately, independent journalist Om Malik on his blog pointed to technical clues that suggest Google is preparing to run an instant-messaging service based on an open-source system known as Jabber.

Jabber technology would allow Google instant-message users to connect with established IM systems that also work with Jabber, including America Online's ICQ and Apple Computer's iChat, Malik said.

"This is the worst possible news for someone like Skype, because now they will be up against not two but three giants who want to offer a pale-version of Skype," he wrote.

Earlier this week, Google said it was branching out beyond pure search to help users manage e-mail, instant messages, news headlines and music. It introduced a new service called the Google Sidebar, a standalone software program that sits on a user's desktop and provides "live" information updates.

Over the 18 months or so, the company has expanded into e-mail, online maps, personalized news and more.

The product push comes as rivals Yahoo, Microsoft and Time Warner's AOL are all pushing to upgrade existing instant-messaging systems and expand into new Net-phone-calling services.

Google's moves take it beyond its roots in Web search and closer to becoming a broad-based Internet media company.

With instant messaging, Google would be breaking into a market in which its major competitors boast tens of millions of subscribers to their established instant-messaging services.

America Online, with its AIM and ICQ brands, counts more than 40 million IM users in the United States alone. Yahoo has around 20 million and Microsoft's MSN Messenger numbers some 14 million users, according to recent data from ComScore Media Metrix.

Just another program to add to Trillian. It's like email...if it's going to be popular you have to camp for your username.

Are you thinking of "Key Hole"?

If so, it's the same thing except now completely free and not only for Nvidia cards. I believe Google Earth is powered by Keyhole.

Everyone was crapping their pants like "OMG look what Google did", but you're absolutely right, essentially that same exact thing with the same interface has been around for some years, it just cost money for a full subscription fee after a free trial.

Don't get me wrong, I love what Google does, but I had the same thoughts as you when I heard about this 'new' Google Earth.

As for theIM software, I might give it a try but I have too many friends on AIM to abandon it.

Yea, that the program! I couldnt remember the name. It was a free month trial or something like that.

Anyway, I just thought when I heard on like CNN and MSNBC like all the commotion about google earth and all this jazz, i was like, um, yea, i did like like 2.5 years ago. Still cool, just amazing what good marketing and name recognition does for you.

yeah, glad i was able to simply login with my gmail login.

i like the clean interface, and how if your chat window is not the active window (behind another window), the IM replies from your friends will show up at the bottom right of the screen for a couple of seconds. the voice chat is fairly good also ...

HAHAHAHAHA! You must! Resistance is futile.

Your processor will be Intel
Your OS will be Microsoft
All of your information will be from Google

Then all we need is a *tiny* bit of your DNA and we'll put this barcode on the back of your neck real quick....

You know that moore's law thing (The observation made in 1965 by Gordon Moore, co-founder of Intel, that the number of transistors per square inch on integrated circuits had doubled every year since the integrated circuit was invented). And there are other similar ones out there, we all know them so I wont digress into any others.

I am making Modena's Law.

Modena's Law states that:
The number of new icons on a taskbar (or however you set it up) grows by 25% per year (this taking in consideration unistallation of programs and deletion of icons through the year as well). However only, at maximum 40% of the added icons are unique programs (programs that are different enough from others installed, installing yahoo messenger when you already have aim is not unique, installing excel when you only have word would be). Thus the growth of new unique program icons is at most 10%, while the growth of new icons with similar programs is atleast 15%
