Hi,
Recently I wanted to install M$ Office but couldn't find the CD-Key. However, I had it installed in other desktop. Is there anyway I could get the CD-Key from the registy? Thanks. |

There may be a way. . . but not sure. Anyhow, if you really do own that copy, just contact MS and they should give you a new code or the one you had.

Yeah, I do own the authentic M$ Office but somehow I remember I could get the CD-Key from the registry. Maybe I should look harder.

If it's a retail version of Office or any other MS app, with the CD key format xxxxxx-yyyyyyyyyyyyy then 111112-111111111 will work. That is, all ones in both fields, except for a 2 in the last digit of the first field. On older apps, all ones will work. This used to be documented on MSDN.
For those apps, the cd key is stored as part of the Product ID you see when you do Help|About. Newer apps, the ones that have five 5-digit fields, don't store the cd key, except as an encrypted part of the product ID, and don't have a convenient 111112-11111111111 formula. Thus you require either the product key sticker/book cover, or the ability to type 'office cd key' at deja, remarq, or astalavista. |

Unfortunately, the one I have is the newer version (5 fields). If I really can't find the CD-Key, may as well download another one from the internet. "w-a-r-e-z".

Since you have the authentic MS Office, don't think of getting the key from warez. I've heard that people got caught and fine bec. of using the key found in warez. I would suggest you call MS.

Call MS anyhow, but cwtalk. . . where did you hear that? That is a very good rumor. MS has so many users that it would be very hard to catch someone unless if they called up ms tech support and told them they had a fake number. . . I dunno, just sounds kinda unlikely. |

Unless you're the end user in one of those big companies, I don't think it'd happen. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion people.

I heard it from my friend. He said that the FBI caught his friend (a college student in Nebraska) and got fine for 2k-3k for using illegal copy of Win98.
Some poeple said that MS actually did catch home users. They said the reason MS did this is to scare people. MS catches a few people in one area and the news will spread out. Then many people in that area will purchase the authentic MS product. This is what i heard but no real source though. spigidygak, If you use illegal key from warez, MS will know it once you online. Especially with Win98SE or Win2k. |

Hm MS came out with a SNIFFER program to sniff out illegal copies of Win98, and then few months later they were trying to sniff out copies of win2k, since there was a leak in the company and was release b4 the retail due date, but to my knowledge i dont know of it looking for the home user computer for pirate copies but the ZDnet article said something about it sniffing sites like http site hopsting information on downloading, and ftp sites..i guess for those users that got caught were the ones that downloaded off a MS dummy homepage front or they stupidly register their illegal blacklisted copies eheh...
my two cents UDM |
