Exclamation Sygate, Kerio firewall products going away...

From http://blogs.washingtonpost.com/secu...ec_to_dit.html:

Quote:
Another free Windows firewall bites the dust. Symantec Corp. has announced rather abruptly that as of next week it will no longer support or offer its Sygate line of firewall products.

The move comes little more than three months after Symantec bought Sygate Technologies along with its Sygate Pro and Sygate Free personal firewall products...

Kerio is also going to discontinue their Personal Firewall as of year-end 2005, according to: http://blogs.washingtonpost.com/secu...rio_kerio.html

You have used Kerio though right? Have you used any of their other applications? I am interested in their mail server.

I have used the free firewall a little and didn't particularly care for it. It is going away as well. I don't know about their enterprise-class products at all.

I am now just using my NAT/SPI firewall in the router, plus the XP firewall, plus MS Antispyware for real-time warnings of changes. It probably isn't the most elegant solution, but it works for me at home.

Looks like a pretty good solution to me.

Do you really need both? I was always under the impression that one or the other worked sufficiently. I have a NAT firewall (router) like you, but I've turned off/not used software firewalls (built in XP one or ZoneAlarm)...my question is, should I? (use both?)

One of the main reasons I run a software firewall (behind the firewall on my router) is to detect and potentially block outbound traffic from my computer. The XP firewall only blocks inbound traffic, so it's no help. I used to use ZoneAlarm (I had the pro version) until it stopped playing nicely with my Comcast service (somehow slowing speeds down to about 1/3 of what they should be), so I switched to Sygate free (adequate - not as nice as ZoneAlarm, but at least it solved the speed issue). Now it looks like I'll need to look for something again.

Well if Sygate free works for you and you've got the installer file (in case you ever have to reinstall it down the road)...you should be ok though, right? AFAIK aren't firewalls not really a "frequently updated" piece of software...since they don't have anything like AV programs have virus definitions, etc.

Sygate hasn't seemed to come out with new versions, but ZoneAlarm comes out with updates fairly often.
