Opera is the new Firefox?

http://www.opera.com/

So i just read in an article that opera is free now. They keep advertising as the fastest browser out there. Anyone use it? How do you compare to Firefox?

I use Opera a lot.

I like it, especially the fact that it remembers my tabs that were open when I close the browser and will automatically load up next time I open it.

It also remembers what webpages were open if the program crashes or is not shut down properly.

Another feature that I use often is the quick key thingies (as I call them).

For example: in the address bar you can type "g gotapex forum" and it will automatically do a google search for you because of the "g" at the beginning.

This also works with many other keys:
'z' for amazon searches
'c' for a price comparison
'e' for ebay
'w' for download.com
....and so on....

I know it's easy to just run a search from the FireFox search bar next to the address bar but I really like using the quick key searches in Opera.

I'd definitely suggest giving it a try.

Oh yeah, integrated mouse gestures too.

Opera user over here too. I like how it caches all the pages you visit, so when you hit back, the page loads up instantly. I'm a big fan of the integrated rss reader also.

I'm trying it out right now again (been a long time since the last time I tried it). I like it a lot so far...it is really fast and has a lot of features. Seems like it renders everything just as good as FF/IE but the built-in mouse gestures...oh how I have missed mouse gestures since giving up on FF (after being sick of the memory leak) and been stuck in IE6sp2 land for so long.

I dunno..it's just nice to be using something "different". I like IE6sp2, but, it's just so...bleh. Seems so restricted/dated in features compared to Opera. Seems like Opera even outclasses FF with it's feature set...the option to "Continue from last time" at startup is a breath of fresh air and something that I can tell will really come in handy since I'm lame and I usually visit the same 5-10 websites every day. It'll help me be able to jump right back to them every time I open up Opera.

Good stuff...good indeed.

gosh you guys convinced me!

ok, seems like it can be good... but... these keyboard shortcuts are TOTALLY different from msie or firefox. i actually think opera's shortcuts are better, but for consistency's sake (must use ie at work), i feel like i can't go back and forth between the two browsers and be comfortable with the shortcut keys (i'm all about keyboard shortcuts)

You can always customize the shortcuts for both the mouse and the keyboard.
Tools -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Shortcuts
I use mouse gestures more than anything, so a change in keyboard shortcuts doesn't bother me, personally.

I'M IN LOVE WITH OPERA!!!!! I just customized it to my liking...and I'm flying with it! the only think I don't like the toolbars and address bars are not fluid. oh well...trivial compared to the rest of the features.

You can also hold down mouse right click and use the scroll wheel.

Yeah just found that out. Some other really convenient gestures are:

BACK: left click while holding right click
FORWARD: right click while holding left click

You don't even have to move the mouse. I don't know how I've lived without mouse gestures till now.
