I was wondering if anyone was using VM Ware. If so how do they have it setup: i.e. VmWare loaded on a Linux box or win2000 and which would be better? I just like the idea of having multple OSes running in different windows on one computer or several...

VMWare Rocks

I started a new job as a (read: whoohoo big deal) security consultant. No, not the kind with a gun but the kind that stops you geeks from hacking web sites... Anyway the first thing they introduced me to was VMWare. VMWare immediately reached my top three in software packages, right up there with good old Citrix and Zenworks. This product changed my life. I am actually configuring another machine right now to run the current RC rev of our new software. It is so easy to use and it actually works. One warning: have tons of ram. I have 228MB and that is barely cutting it.

my system:

P III 600, 228MB ram, 16GB HDD Gateway (shudder) 9300pro laptop.
Windows 2000 Pro, not service packed (you think I trust Microsoft that much?)

note: I have Windows tweaked down to using ~40MB of RAM and this allow me to give over ~160MB to the VM if I push it.

One of the coolest things I have done is to make a "perfect" VM of Windows NT workstation which I than make a copy of for my particular needs. I have about 8 different VMs but can only run 1 at a time due to lack of ram.... ;(

I run Windows 95, Linux, NT WS & Srvr, Win ME, Win 98, BEOS, Solaris, Novell... Boy does that freak people out...

Cool: Scores an 11 out of 10 for me!

If I have to hear another security guard telling me to put the goat down again I am just going to stomp my little foot and ignore him!

I have always wanted to try VMWare but I didn't want to have to pay for the full version and I don't think I have enough memory at 128 MB. Maybe if I add another 128 MB I will give it a shot with the demo.

VMWare on linux is better (more stable and needs less memory), but you need at least 256MB to run it comfortably.
