S: smelly co-worker
We got a new guy at work, and he smells really bad! It's not just breath, it's sweaty body odor that I can smell a few feet away. And since we're all working in a lab, it's hard to avoid him (besides, he's a nice guy otherwise!). Yech! Oh well, at least its temporary!

We had an IT guy who smelled really bad. I would hang my jacket on my chair and when he used my chair to fix my computer, my jacket smelled just like him so I ended up removing my jacket before he came and would take that opportunity to take a break. But even when I returned the smell lingered. Eeeew.
Honestly, how do you handle somethng like this without hurting someone's feelings. He was a nice guy too! |

Wow, lots of smelly workers around. We need cheap odor detectors to give people a little hint.

didn't see that thread, else I would've joined in! ![]() he's not one of our employees (he's a vendor/contractor), so going to HR won't work. And there's a limited number of us in the lab, so I think he'd be able to figure it out. wonder if I can just bring in an air freshener and stick it on my desk for the next time he stops by my station... |

Or better yet, leave an "anonymous" tube of deodorant and some soap on their desk while they are away. ![]()

I like the HR idea only I don't wanna be the one to tell HR. Leaving deodorant or soap on their desk seems to hurtful. If they weren't nice

According to this thread: http://www.gotapex.com/off-topic/138...rfume-gag.html (Smoke and perfume....gag) You can't cover up a stank like that. |

I dunno. Leaving deodorant or a nice soap on a desk anonymously may be a little hurtful, but it also may be a wake-up call to the offender. He/she may actually appreciate it after a little thought. And it would send a very clear message. Heck, the person may actually sneak into a bathroom stall or something and clean up or at least rub on some deodorant, somewhat alleviating the problem immediately, instead of waiting for HR to do something about it. |

Or you could just be nice and offer him gum, cologne or dryer sheets everytime they come near you.

![]() BTW... puttin' cologne on top of FUNK does not make it better. Trust me... that is a BIG no no. ![]() Deodorant fares better... but cologne covered funk is just nasty. ![]() |

instead of going about this in such a round about way, why not just let him know directly?

Telling a person their breath stinks is difficult enough, I can't imagine how huffy/insulted/hurt a person would feel if you tell them that THEY stink. Plus, in this case, I think it's a cultural thing, where his culture doesn't bathe as frequently as ours does. |
