S: Identity theft, waking up to it.

So some assbite is using my AMEX Blue card to pick up a camera from Gateway. I called AMEX this morning and got my card de-activated. Now I just have to wait for the charge to post to the account so I can dispute it. In the mean time the nice lady at gateway gave me this douchebag's e-mail. What to do with that?

wesleycri2[at]yahoo[dot]com

Not to mention I find out those best price camera douchebags have yet to refund me.

Dude, tha sucks.

Start here - http://www.privacyrights.org/fs/fs17a.htm

Since it's a yahoo address, it's probably brand new & temporary so I doubt you'll be able to track him down. Did you get the address of the guy from Gateway? I'd start with the local police in whatever area he's living.

Did that, have the address, going to my PD today to report it, then they work with the people in Grass Valley.

i was going to ask that too. i use virtual account numbers online when i order which helps lessen the chance of this kind of thing happening.

I didn't lose my card so I'm not sure exactly how he got the number, however the town the thing is being shipped to is up north where I was just road-tripping so it could have been some waiter or something I suppose.

Yeah, we had a guy who worked at my old job who was stealing numbers off of the store copy receipts and memorizing and writing down the CID numbers. He got totally busted after he purchased $300 worth of gift cards at our company and tried to use them...

...now if that doesn't raise a red flag, I don't know what does.

Good luck with your local PD. I did all the legwork (tracking down email addresses, IP addresses, had everything ready for the police department to request the ISP for the person using the session to buy the stuff) and nothing happened. I wasn't out any money, but it was a hassle and very disheartening that nothing was done despite all of the information I gathered.

My local police department claimed they were incapable of pursuing computer crimes and the FBI agent I met with said it was too small amount (~$1900) to pursue.

Hey AC - I am now in Auburn during the week, which is close to Grass Valley. Want me to do a drive-by for you? (no women, no kids...)

Oh, you'll either have to deal with the Grass Valley PD or the Nevada County Sheriff. Too bad it wasn't Placer County or I'd hook you up with my neighbor - the senior deputy district attorney for Placer County. Still, he might be able to hook me up with someone in the Nevada County district attorney's office, if you're interested.

Sorry to hear about that. Having your credit card number swiped like that is no fun at all -- and the scary thing is, it's just getting worse and worse.

Good luck with the resolution. I've had it happen quite a few times to me, and Citibank has been great about it. Mail some papers back to them, they recind the charge and send you a new card. and that's the last you ever hear of it.
