SS: Laptop IDE Controller and/or Motherboard fried
So late last night I was burning a CD for a friend and I received one of the fantastic blue screens of death, the first one I have ever seen on my laptop since I purchased it over 2 years ago. The Asus M5200N notebook has worked incredibly well and I have never had any problems whatsoever.
So I rebooted and logged back into windows and everything seemed fine, then my computer locked up with another BSOD with a different message. So for 8 hours I sat there trying to get back into Windows only to find that I couldn't even logon to retrieve my files. To make a long story short, apparently there is something wrong with the Motherboard connection or the IDE controller or both that is causing the notebook to stop recognizing the hard drive altogether. I managed to copy all my important files off the hard drive this morning, by literally having the hard drive dangle from it's ide cable because that was the only position the hard drive could be read. I then went on over to Fry's to pick up the cheapest laptop hard drive they had in hopes that I could just replace the hard drive and load everything back on. To my displeasure, the hard drive could not be detected in the BIOS nor the Windows setup. So now I'm at a point where I can take the notebook into an authorized service center to have it inspected, or I can just go shell out a few extra bucks to buy an entirely brand new laptop. I absolutely love my Asus laptop (it's a very portable, light laptop that I take with me everywhere) and would hate to part with it, but maybe this is a good time for me to look to upgrade. |
