opinions needed about a job

i have a friend losing there job december 4th. they are only offering a $1500 bonus for employees who stay till this date. doesn't matter if you have 2 years or 20 years with them-they are not giving you any kind of benny package. they will try and hook you up with the company they have given all the work to. this is a national appliance company that is laying off its entire repair fleet: the Maytag repair man is out of a job starting JAN 1.

anyway, if you had this drop on you after 18 years with a company would you stick around to see it to the end, or leave before and blow off the $1500 bonus? what would you do? sucks eather way !

I'd say to simply not have any loyalty. If he finds a job before then, take it, screw the company. If he doesn't, might as well work the job he already has and then get a nice bonus

It is a mistake to be loyal to a corporation. You are nothing more than a resource.

I'd be interviewing like crazy between now & then. If I find something sooner, I'd jump on it & forget the bonus.

Yeah, why skip the money if nothing btter comes along.. But if better shows up, than out the door you go. I wouldn't even bother with 2 week notice if a new place wants you right away.

Or better yet... Tell them you are taking a 2 week vacation and then mail in your resignation.

One time I was working at a place that was being shut down. They offered certain employees an extra severance bonus (something like 3 or 4 weeks extra pay) if they would stay on an extra month to help get things closed down. (The other employees were let go with 2 weeks of pay.) I was one of the ones that got to stay. It was really a nice perk, as it gave an extra month to job hunt while still having a job. And the attitude at the company was really "loose" - my manager sat me down and said, "Your first priority is to find a new job. If an interview conflicts with getting something done here, forget the work and go on the interview." In the end, I did land another position during the extra month (but I finished the time so I got to collect the bonus), then took a week off between jobs.

...the world is smaller than you think. Never burn a bridge if you can avoid it. Interview like crazy and hopefully they can find a job that will begin in January. Stay until the end, get the nice bonus, take a long vacation, and start work in the new year. If something comes up and they have to start sooner, go ahead and take it but be civil about leaving.

Obviously they can expect employees to be interviewing through December and will be flexible as possible. Most managers understand what's happening and will do all that's possible to make things work. Actually a pretty good deal to be able to openly interview.
