s: severe neck pain

wow. i haven't been in this much pain in a very long time. i came to work yesterday and was fine. as the day progressed i developed some pain in the right side of my neck that felt like a sore muscle or something. like i slept on it wrong.

last night i couldn't hardly sleep because of it and it's gotten so much worse i can hardly move my head and it actually hurts to chew. i am at work but am getting worried and might go have it checked out. at least to get some strong meds to dull the pain. 400mg of ibuprofen did nothing for me this morning.

it's so bad that if i turn my head a little bit too quickly it makes me gasp and feel a little faint. sounds ghey but

any ideas as to what it could be? i haven't done anything to hurt it. only exercise has been a couple days on the elliptical this week like normal. and it sure didn't hurt when i woke up yesterday morning.

Did you lift anything above your head lately? Have you been raking?

I have three herniated discs in my neck. I have lived with constant nagging pain for 15 years. Sometimes I do things which causes horrible pain. I have had 4 MRIs and each time the neurosurgeons recommend surgery, which I refuse to get.

Anyway, sometimes the pain calms down on it's own. But usually not.

Get a microwavable thingy to put around your neck. If it's muscular, it may relax them enough to relieve some of the pain. Sometimes cold packs will work, too. You may have to experiment to see what works best.

I have a chiropractor which I see twice a month that keeps the pain at an acceptable level.

If drugs don't do the trick, I highly recommend a chiropractor. But finding a good one can be a task.

Oh, and sitting at a computer for extended periods can aggravate the neck.

My wife was having real problems with her back. She ended up going to a NUCCA (National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association) chiropractor who helped her incredibly. The guy she sees in this area has kept his charges quite reasonable (because he wants the treatment to be affordable for people - he has people coming from 9 states), but some other guys charge (and get) outrageous fees.

doc said it was likely my shoulder muscle where it hooks into my neck/head. i'm waiting on my prescription to be filled for vicodin and valium. lol. doesn't that sound like some pretty heavy stuff?

all i know is i'm hurting so bad i'm sometimes shaking.

on the plus side i noticed that my resting HR has dropped 20 beats/min and i'm 18 pounds lighter than when i last went in. my resting hr is now 60. wOOt

Sounds like you're in damn good shape except for the neck pain. The valium (especially) and the vicodin may make you kinda loopy for a couple of days, but should help.

Re: chiropractors, if you decide to go that route, be sure to find a good one. Especially with the neck manipulation stuff, there's a pretty significant risk of stroke from vertebral artery dissection, which is another ball of wax.

Hope you feel better soon.

I'm glad for you. I wish my back pain had cleared up with one shot of pills.

The NUCCA chiropractors are quite different from the "twist and crunch" type. My daughter is in town this week and saw the guy we use. What they do is adjust the alignment of the top vertebrae - my wife says that when he is doing it, you can't believe that anything is happening. But what a difference it made for her once she was straitened out.

I occasionally get the neck pain and it's usually a result of how I sleep (on my stomach.) I've tried to sleep on my back but it just doesn't work. I'll end up on my stomach by morning.

I got vicodin after taking a baseball to the temple on a shot back up the middle when I was pitching. It didn't really do anything for me so I have 19 left.

Ah. Not familiar with those. Most I've encounter are strong proponents of aggressive adjustment, X-rays, etc. The thing that annoys me is that I've seen plenty of cervical/thoracic/lumbar radiographs that are medically normal, but have been deemed abnormal by chiropracters based on very minor findings. Fixing things that aren't necessarily abnormal isn't good medicine. And I have seen more than one person who has had an incapacitating stroke as a direct result of chiropractic manipulation.

Not saying that there are no good chiropractors or that they don't have their place. Just warning people to be careful, especially if they advocate manipulations on young children, etc. A lot of damage can be done that way especially.
