I GOT IT! The pay was even worse than I expected, but I am not in it for the pay anyway. I am working in a city called St.Augustine which you may remember from your history books is the oldest city in the US. It's like living in Europe in a lot of places. The fishing is great, there is a good surf break and I have friends nearby (which is good considering the divorce is about to be final). I am managing a boater's world which is a step towards district managing a group of stores. They are a great group to work for. Now it looks like I am going to lose that weight I wanted to lose (no money to eat!).
I start Friday. Thanks for all the kind words guys, it really(!) means a lot.

Congrats! I have many memories of field trips to St. Augustine. Cool place. And not too far from Daytona.

Thumbs up

Well, two days in and I am very pleased with the crew I have. There is some cultural changes in their future but no glaring problems and definitely some knowledge in that store! Thank God! They seem to approach me with a bit of trepidation, but the last manager lasted 5-6 mos so I understand.
My big thing is customer service. period. And I hope that I can lead clearly through example. Oh, I found an apartment literally across the street. This is a good thing since gas is super high and the grocery store is in my mall. If I get this place it would cut my driving to 2/3 times a week max. THAT would be very very good.
Wish me the best!
Thresh
ps - thanks again so much for the well wishes guys. This divorce thing is really tough and knowing I have friends out there (even cyber ones) that want me to succeed helps boost the morale.

Weekly update on the job/life:

Well, I got the apartment. Yay. It's literally across the street. So, no high gas bills. It's not the prettiest place I have ever lived in, but it's roomy and clean and has a new roof.

The job is looking good too. It's a little scary being the new guy. I know I have skills to bring to the table, but there are so many processes that I simply don't know yet. It's a bit awkward to be boss one moment and student the next. If anyone has any advice I am all ears. I am definitely not being a jerk about it with my co-workers I'll tell you that. I just want to communicate to them that they're doing a great job and that we all have room for improvement.

I also saw two huge bald eagles. CLOSE! How cool is that?

My advice about the job:

Be very approachable, but not everyone's 'buddy'. If anyone challenges you, be professional but maintain the upper hand. In the first month or 2, try to talk to everyone under you one on one, but don't make it look like you're interviewing the team. That's usually the best way to figure out what the problems are, who the troublemakers are, and who actually knows what's going on.

The point is, as the new boss, to earn the respect of the employees & figure out how things operate, but not to alienate anyone right away. It's a very fine line to walk for a while as people get used to you & your management style, but it'll go a long way in the future if you have to make difficult choices.

It's good to socialize, go out for drinks, etc. with everyone, but try to stay at least a half step or so removed from emerging yourself 100% into the social lives of anyone who works directly for you. Could save you some grief down the road.

Good luck!
