NSS: Credit card rewards

I never really looked into the credit card rewards my bank offers till last night. I dug around the website and found out I have almost $800 in reward credits accrued over the past few years. Schwing! And they have an amazing amount of good quality, name-brand stuff, probably close to a 1000 items across a couple dozen categories. At the very least I could just get $800 in Visa gift cards. It's like Christmas, Easter and my birthday all rolled up in one.

This stuff wasn't really advertised much, so kind of a fluke I was clicking around and found out. Check to see if your bank offers a rewards program. A lot of them charge fees, so beware, but if you charge a lot of stuff it may still be worth it.

I don't think this'll stop anything though - the better you idiot-proof a system, the more impressive the idiot becomes.

Nice find!

I usually acrue anywhere from $200-300 worth of membership rewards goodies per year from Amex.

Of course, it'll probably be about $1000 worth this year since all of my gas purchases go on the Amex....

Niiiice. I've been wanting to do this but it seems like it's so hard to find a card that is actually worth it.

Definitely shop around and review your annual charges. I see some cards offer 2-3% back, but most charge an annual fee of $50-100 for the card or the rewards program. I'm only getting 1.67% back on my Visa, but no fee.

I've been looking at Amex--I could get a free card through Costco and then I could get a rebate on all my Costco shopping, including gasoline (3% back). They don't take Visa or MC. It's nice that it's actually cash back, not credit toward a purchase. My only hangup is I don't want to impact my FICO by getting yet another credit card. I would probably get $150 back each year from Costco alone, maybe more with how fast the prices of food and gas are rising.
