NSS - new car, SSSSS - someone scratched it!

So I've been talking in Automotive for a while about the Altima Hybrid that I've been wanting to get to replace my Tacoma for obvious reasons. I have been looking at the Altima Hybrid for about a year now, test driving the 2007 and getting real close to purchasing it. I've always liked that it is a bigger hybrid, as I am a big dude (6'1 230lbs). I finally got a great deal and I bought it on Friday. So far, I'm loving this car. It's beautiful for one thing, not anything you'd expect for a car that saves you money at the pump. I got it in Dark Slate, which makes it look like a lot more expensive car than it is. It's a very smooth ride, with very comfortable seats and great visibility, and the stock sound system is nice. I drove up to Big Bear Lake for Memorial weekend and even though I drove up 6000 feet, I still managed 32 mpg. I'm sure that'll improve on the much more even terrain of SD. So in summary, I'm really happy with this car!

Flash forward to SSSSS. I was up in Big Bear with my lady for the weekend. We decided to take a hike up one of the recommended trails. You have to pay 5 bucks for a day pass up there in Big Bear, which means you can park at any of their lots and then take the trails. We paid, parked, then hiked. The trail was kind of a nightmare, because there were a lot of people out with their families, which is certainly not a bad thing, but the people that were on the trail were not people that really had a grasp on the whole respecting Mother Nature thing. Parents were running around the trail with their kids screaming and killing the pleasantness of the hike. Luckily it was still beautiful enough that we enjoyed the hike. However, when I got back to my car, I noticed a HUGE scratch on my hood and bumper as well. It didn't really look like it had been keyed, but rather that someone had probably sat on the hood or something like that, and moved around a bit, scratching this beautiful new paint job on my car.

I couldn't believe it. I'm pretty good at finding a silver lining so I am kind of chalking it up to **** happens. However my lady was really upset because I had owned the car for less than 48 hours. I'm probably gonna drop a couple hundred bucks to get it fixed, because I can't stand having this brand new car with such an obvious blemish. I was just talking to my Dad right after I purchased the car, telling him that I wasn't going to stress if it ever got scratched. But I am being tested very quickly on this philosophy. The real thing that bugs me is that whoever did this HAD to have known what they did afterwards. But there was no note or anything. That sucks

Had I been driving around Big Bear Lake in a Hummer I think I could understand the karma of me getting some damage to my vehicle, however you'd think that driving a HYBRID that Mother Nature would be on my side. Kind of ironic. I'm going to try and be positive about the experience by saying I got an extra $500 off the price because of the Memorial Day sale, which I'll put right back in the car in the paint touch-up, and therefore I'm not really losing too much. It just bugs me that people are not accountable like that.

All in all, the NSS overpowers the Suckage because I feel better about driving in this terrible gas-pricing days. But the suckage remains until I get the car back to looking like I bought it.

That does suck. The last two times someone hit my bumper and damaged it they both left names and insurance info and I got my cars fixed both times. Each happened about two months apart.

Guess I got lucky, twice.

Anyway, congrats on the new ride.

Congrats on the new car... and yeah, the scratch sucks.

The folks who did it better be glad you didn't see them do it I bet...

The crap thing about insurance and say... a $100 or $250 deductible for comprehensive is that you pay all this money to HAVE insurance, but god forbid you actually want to USE it. Make 2 or 3 claims over the life of your car and you run the risk of being canceled due to repeat claimant.

Pretty stupid, but it happens.

wow, I would be so mad. I wonder if there's some way to have a security camera in your car. So many people will pull in next to someone, scratch the car, and then just move so they don't have to deal with it. Whenever I am "fortunate" enough to drive the minivan, I often get "stuck" because I don't want to scratch someone's car, since I am such a terrible parker.

Folks must love me because I still park out in the boonies even though my truck is 5 years old and has a few dings/dinks. I love it so and treat it with kids gloves so anyone near me gets the good stuff. I am sorry for your scratch - I will pass along a little more of the good karma for ya.

how deep is the scratch? Did it go through the clear coat? Through the paint? You might be able to buff it out if it didnt go through the paint.

Our 2009 Camry Hybrid got a deep scratch within the first two weeks. It is on the driver's side door, sort of a dent/scratch combo. We have no idea who the culprit was. It happened in a Safeway parking lot, so it may have been a runaway cart.

Our attiude was: "well, at least the first scratch is out of the way... it gets easier from here..."
