SS: Scott got a 2-week notice
He's been unhappy with his job the whole time he's been there. It wasn't like he thought it was going to be, they never took the time to teach him when he asked, just flying through whatever needed done with him watching. But he was determined to stick it out til he'd been there for a year at least to see if he started getting the bumps in pay he was promised when he got hired and the benefits (more than 1 vacation/sick day, etc).
The bad part is that he was kind of out of his league with parts of the job. He knew going in that he was going to have some programming to learn but he is a pretty quick learner, especially when given the help when he asks. But even now, 11 months after getting the job, he was still pretty slow on some things. So, a week and a half or so ago, his boss told him that he had 3 weeks for them to try and figure out why he was having trouble and to try and work past it or they would have to part ways. Late last week, he came to Scott and gave him his 2 week notice before he is "terminated". Some of it we think is that due to a shift in the company, they are trimming down some of the staff (this is just from what he's been hearing the last couple of weeks). He was the last hired in his department. So we think that has a lot to do with it, although they have not said that at all. Anyway, he's now furiously trying to find a job. He's had a few nibbles but no major leads yet. *sigh* So keep us in your thoughts. heh

I've been given notice a few times during my career - only once was it a "positive" (a job I was looking to leave, and given 2 weeks notice with pay when I already was sitting on an offer). Hope Scott is able to land a new position soon.

I've been in a similar situation: a job that was supposed to be technical and a perfect fit for my experience turned out to be mostly administrative and the training was awful. It took a couple months partially because I was looking for a particular sort of thing and now I have a fun job

Sounds like it just was not working out- even if Scott was doing the best he could. That will happen. This could lead to a better match for him. If it is a large company, maybe there could be an area he is better suited for? Losing a job is tough on the ego, but things do work out eventually. I hope he is able to find something soon.

Sorry to hear it. There will be a lot more pink slips floating around in the coming months. Maybe he's the canary in the coal mine who will get one of the better jobs that are out there now, and which won't be available when his coworkers get let go.
My company just laid off 10% and we have no income in the pipe. I seriously wonder how long till the place closes down completely. Aside from airlines and carmakers, how long can you bleed billions/year before your parent co. shuts you down? At least you both aren't in the same trouble. My fiancee and I work in the same company! |

That sucks. but really, if these people sucked, why wasn't he looking sooner? Why be miserable and try to endure when there are many good jobs out there.
Your husband sounds like a good learner and a hard worker, and seriously, i'd take that over someone who is better technically qualified but lazy or crude. Look around and maybe take a menial job for now and keep looking. I totally slummed it some months in grad school, working alongside some high school dropouts but i was made manager in 2 months because i worked hard and they recognized i had a touch more talent than my resume let on. Then a year later i graduated and hunted down a real job. But i learned a lot and enjoyed being a manager. Kind of helped me guide my career. I honestly believe the people you work with and for determine your happiness factor to a big degree. Kind of like marriage. If the girl is amazing in bed, a genius, and a billionaire, but she is a total pain in the butt, would you really be happy? I know some guys will say yes, but i'd honestly say no. I was much happier working for less money when i was happy, than getting paid to be miserable. but thats my opinion. it is your's and Scott's life and he and you should do what makes the most sense to you. that sucks jenny. especially when seeing a bunch of incompetent ceos getting multi-millions when getting canned.
I hope things go well for him in his job search. What's he looking for specifically?

Well, the people themselves were ok. He liked them and liked the company, it just wasn't fitting well. If he had more programming experience, it would have been a much better fit. He was really trying to suck it up for the first year and see if things got better. He was supposed to get raises, get a lot more vacation (in that first year, I believe he got only 1 paid personal day, of course, not including federal holidays). So he just kept hoping one day it would all click into place in his head and that, along with the benefits, would make it much better. Unfortunately, neither happened. heh Quote:
He is a good learner and a very hard worker. Unfortunately, we are already on the low end of what we can make and pay all our bills and live. If it was just me & Scott, it would be different. But with a 10-year-old, things are much more complicated. So taking a lower paying job just to be happy wasn't an option unless it was a "have to". Fortunately, the job he did get is paying a little bit more AND it is doing what he WANTS to do. So all's well that ends well. ![]() |
