S: losing money in LV...and NOT gambling

So this happened a while back.

We were in LV, and I wanted to get some money out and gamble. I went to those cash machines and tried to get out some money. It debited my account, but the money never came out b/c the slot which the money was supposed to come out of never opened. So i called them and they made me call my own bank, just to have the bank call them to make a claim. After a month, they said that they did not find a discrepancy in the balance (which meant that somehow, someone got the money AFTER i left). So then I wrote a letter to the main office, and they haven't replied yet. Anyone have anything similar happen?

Wonder if there was something some thief put on the slot to keep the money from coming out til you left then they took it off and grabbed the cash? Suck.

Yup... sounds like you got scammed by a theif.

I saw something like this on 20/20 (or was it NBC Dateline) about how theives can rig ATM machines to steal your money/ATM card.

Do they have something that will actually rig the machine so they can get the cash? I've seen warnings (such as here) about thieves can attach a card reader to the front of the ATM and use a camera to capture the PIN. But if they can actually rig the ATM, that would be an even bigger security issue.

Well, if they can catch your card, then how hard would it be for someone to put something in the machine to block the cash being spit out and then come back later to retreive the cash?

Or even moreso, crooks are putting up "fake ATMs" which steal your money.

Here is an article related to this:

The former "merely" involves attaching an additional card reader to the front of the ATM. The latter would involve having to physically modify the insides of the ATM, which should present a more difficult task.

I know that the ATM at my bank used to have a chamber that the cash would be dispensed into and an exterior door to the camber would then pop open to allow you to retrieve the cash. I would imagine that it would be easier to design some sort of magnetic or electronically controlled device that would prevent the door from opening until the thief wanted, but in such a case the thief would have to use their ATM card (or a stolen one) to first insert the device and then later retrieve the cash (and device). My bank's ATM was later changed to one that spat the cash out into an open "bin" (where on a couple of occasions I found an extra $20 that someone had left behind as they slid the cash out), and most recently to one that just pushes the "stack" of bills out of a slot for you to grab as a whole (probably to eliminate the issues with the bin).

Did you see the article I posted?

Criminals today are buying ATMs altogether that have access to the bank. If you use one of those scam ATMs then you can lose your money.

Randy Glass is a convicted con artist, a felon on probation. And now he’s a man who is trying to venture into a new business: the ATM business. Because it’s not just banks that own cash machines. Individuals can buy them, set them up in delis, or gas stations or malls, and make money on each transaction. But even Randy admits that someone with a record like his shouldn’t be able to get his hands on an ATM.

Man. thats horrid.
The ATM "door" where the money comes through closed and locked. Didn't seem openable at all. Should have gotten my hammer and beaten on it. Then when they got mad at me, told them to give me the damn money.

Sorry Chi. Thats BS. Someone is stealing the money. You should tell the casino as well that someone is stealing from the ATM's and the date an time. Then perhaps they'll break out the surveillance cameras and see what happened after we left.

I would have to agree with Maarchk.

Contact the casino and their security dept. I don't know if they can do anything for you now, but if they see a pattern in complaints, they will want to know. And they all work together on the strip so other instances don't even have to occur at that same machine.

We (military) were told to avoid the ATMs at the casinos - to pull money from a bank atm instead by the base. They are 3rd party ATMs for the most part and even contacting a casino worker or security when it originally occurs won't do anything except get maybe a sorry and contact info for that 3rd party company.
