SS: Truly a Black Friday

Yesterday morning I received a call informing me that my step-brother had apparently died. He was 1 month into a year long teaching position teaching English to children in Korea. Adding insult to injury in our religion there are very specific rules about how we treat our dead and we cannot do this because of where he died.

In an horribly ironic twist of fate, this was the exact 4year anniversary of when we nearly lost him before. To make matters worse today would have been his 26th birthday.

He was way too young to go and he hadnt even met his niece yet. I can honestly say he was a great guy and everyone he met loved him. At this point I am numb and in total disbelief. I (we) are already missing him so much and he was taken way too early.

RIP Pete.

Whoa - I'm really sorry. Is there anything I can do from here in Korea to help?

omg man that is truly terrible. Way too young for sure. What happened? Probably too soon to talk about it so no worries if you can't. One of my best girls lost her little brother a couple of days before Thanksgiving out of nowhere. They've been struggling to make sense of it all. Nothing really anyone can tell you to make you feel any better. The very least you should know is that you are in my prayers brother. Hope you can start healing soon.

Thank you all for the well wishes, it is truly appreciated.

I appreciate the offer to help, but at this point everything is being handled. The US State Department has actually been acting as a liason in dealing with all of the logistical issues related to recovering his body and wrapping up his affairs. From what I have seen they have been indispensible in this matter.

As for what happened, he was riding on the subway to his school. 2 stops from his work he suddenly collapsed and was not breathing. Good samaritans on the subway called 119 (apparently the Korean emergency number) and administered CPR. They managed to get him breathing again before the emergency workers arrived. Sometime during the 10 minute drive to the hospital they lost him and were never able to get him breathing again despite working on him for 30 minutes.

It appears he died of natural causes....

Thanks again for the well wishes.

natural causes? that's awfully odd at that age, unless there are some extenuating circumstances you alluded to earlier.

more rhetorical than anything... again sorry for your loss.

Flying back to San Diego tomorrow....I am already dreading this. I will hazard to guess that when I get back it will be real.
