Bourbon is from Kentucky. Scotch is a type of whiskey originally named because it was made in.....yep, you guessed it Scotland!

I think the main distinction between bourbon and scotch is what it is made from. Scotch is made from malted barley whereas bourbon is made from mainly corn.

Very true. According to wikipedia - bourbon has to be aged in oak casks at least 2 years and scotch has to be "matured" in oak casks at least 3 years and a day.
Scotch can be made with other whole grains, along with barley, and still be called scotch and bourbon has to be at least 51% made from corn. Whiskeys (or whisky if you are from Japan, Scotland, and Canada - I think) are all distilled from fermented grain mash. Last edited by guiseppewv : 05-13-2009 at 03:41 PM. |

Don't know the makeup details of bourbon vs. scotch, but I do know that bourbon generally hits its peak age at about 7 or 8 years, after which extra aging has no real effect on it, and perhaps hurts it. Whereas scotch can be aged like wine, forever and a day, and just have its character build and build.
Also, in terms of flavor, bourbon has a sweet, caramelish odor and flavor underneath the sharp alcohol taste, while scotch is not sweet at all generally, and has some level of smokiness to it, depending on the amount of peat used. |

so i went to trader joe's this past week, and i saw they had a trader joe's brand blended scotch. I have to say, it's quite tasty. anybody else try it? and on top of the good taste, it's only $10! can't beat that.

Scotch, Whiskey, Bourbon...whatever it is, I call it one and the same. I personally drink the following regularly and have been trying other brands when I have the chance.
Maker's Mark Seagram's 7 (only for mixing) Glenlivet 12 Johnnie Walker Red Johnnie Walker Black Johnnie Walker Blue Jack Daniels Woodford Reserve Knob Creek Wild Turkey Chivas Regal Crown Royal (some of my friends like this, but I'm not really a big fan) Arguably the best I ever had was Sazerac 18. Whenever I find myself at finer establishments I've asked if they had it. Only 3 to date have had it in stock.
