NSS - Scotch

I just want to say, after a long day of doing homework, it's nice to sit back with a glass of glenlivet (neat) and bask in its great aura of goodness. cheers!

Yes, but what vintage of Glenlivet? May I suggest the 1959 Cellar collection. (If you take my suggestion, I suggest you invite me over too!)

I second that. A nice glass of Macallan 18 or if you can swing it, 25, is tough to beat. Glenlivet is ok but a little too tame for my liking.

I bought a 15 Yr Nikka Yoichi single malt for one of my closest friends' birthday. I got it while I was in Japan. http://www.nikka.com/eng/products/wh...whisky/yoichi/

How does this compare in taste to the traditional scotch whiskeys? I know my brother has tried a number of malt whiskeys from Japan and raves about a number of them.

Frankly, I don't know, however, I will be happy to tell you after I give the bottle to my friend this weekend. I am sure he will crack the bottle open immediately.

yah, i've always wanted to try japan scotch. I've heard good things about it.

nija, scotch is one of the finer things in life. The flavors that burst out of every sip amazes me every time i drink a glass of good scotch.

It's really all personal preference. Some like the more subtle varieties like Glenlivet while others prefer varieties with far more robust qualities like a Lagavulin. It's very similar to wine in the multitude of different qualities the scotch possesses.

Personally, I'm a big fan of Macallan but I believe Glenlivet is probably the most popular single malt worldwide.

Would Glenlivet be a good starting point?

After reading this thread, I went and enjoyed a Maccallan at a Irish bar in Philly to celebrate my last final. It was definitely some good stuff with great aroma and flavor combinations. I've had Glenlivet before, but I was pretty lit back then and the only thing I remember was that it was very smooth.

When it comes to single malts, its more a matter of personal taste than quality. I can't think of any "cheap stuff" when it comes to single malts. That's what blends like Johnny Walker red or black or Dewar's or Cutty Sark.

Generally, people tend to either like peatier whiskeys (Laphroiag, Macallan, Bowmore, Lgavulin, Islay scotches in general) or smoother, less peaty ones(Auchentoshan, Oban, Glenfiddish, Balvenie, Glenmorangie).

Too many neighbors and stuff at the party yesterday to break open the bottle of Japanese Single-malt. I wanted the gift to be enjoyed by my friend not drank by a bunch of drunk b-day party people. I am going to try to get him to crack it open this weekend.

guiseppewv, have you started taking a liking to scotch? I couldn't help but notice the second post from the linked thread was you voicing your dislike for scotch.

No, I haven't. My friend likes scotches and single-malt and he is one of my closest friends, so I got him a great present. I was going to post his reactions to the beverage b/c I figured mine would be negative. I just have not become a connesieur of scotch but that doesn't mean other people shouldn't enjoy it!

i think the main difference is where it's from. Both are considered whiskeys i think.

one difference for me is that bourbon is sweeter than scotch...scotch as a more earthy taste to it.

Straight redneck bourbon is sweeter...and i sometimes go temporarily blind from drinking it...

Candy is dandy but liquor is quicker...

Mmm redneck bourbon actually sounds real good! haha.
