I dont know if I am the only one who has this problem, but I am constantly trying to clean up my room (and house in general) but no matter how many hours I work, it doesnt seem to make one damn bit of difference! This is seriously pissing me off. I try and try to keep it clean. I even went out and bought more filing cabinets to place all of my papers in, but for some reason I cant seem to make any head way. I am beginning to believe that there is some sort of magnetic abnormality in the earths crust which pulls in any and everything around it. Its either that, or I have solved the problem with paper recycling because they are living and breeding in my room.

To make matters worse, I am out of closet space, I have boxes filled with who knows what reaching halfway up the walls, and no space between my bed and the entertainment center to walk. I skin my damn ankles if I try to walk there.

I cant stand this. So am I the only one with who can never seem to get their room clean?

My brother has the magic ability to turn a clean room into the city dump in a blink of an eye.
Everytime i clean my room my room he manages to turn it upside down. Which really sucks for me since i dont clean my room that often.

Ufcrusher's theory of "magnetic abnormality in the earths crust which pulls in any and everything around it" is the answer. Hapoo. Don't blame you brother. This magnetic abnormality is just a little stronger around some people. They're just born like that.

hmm this magnetic theory could explain why my tv turns all sorts of different colors when he's around. Or maybe he just has a magnet in his pocket

I recently had a similar frustration with my studio apartment. The problem is very simple - I just have way too much stuff. Even when I have everything put away, floors vacuumed, etc, I still have too many things visible in my apartment. Stacks of magazines on a shelf still looks like a stack of magazines, my computer cabinet has no front so everthing is visible, my entertainment center is overloaded with stuff, you get the idea.

I'm going through all my magazines, keeping reletively few that I want to keep for reference - though with the internet there won't be many. I replaced a bookcase with one with deeper shelves and now most of my paperbacks store behind the hardbacks and thus out of sight. I'm building a platform that will raise my small couch off the floor to free up some floor space and become a focal point for my decorating scheme, and my bed will slide out from under the platform.

There's more, but I think you get the idea. Get rid of a bunch of stuff. You said you have "boxes filled with who knows what reaching halfway up the walls". So why keep them? Since you don't know what's in them, why let them be a problem? Analyze your life habits (for example, I got rid of my computer magazines and I no longer buy them, cuz I get all my comp-related info from the internet) and make up your mind to do without this or that. Once you get rolling it gets easier, and the resulting simplicity is a very nice change.

Hmmmm.... I still like my magnetic theory, because the too much stuff theory just wouldnt pan out. The last time I moved, which was in July of 98, I got rid of my National Geographic collection dating back to the late 70's, all of my fish tanks, two desks, all of my fish magazines, my car magazines, my computer magazines, 2/3rds of my book collection, my weight bench and weights, as well as any other odds and ends I couldnt justify moving across the country. (they charge by the weight damnit) Since I have been out here, I really havent added that much stuff. I never replaced my fish tanks, my weights, my desks, magazines, etc. I have just lived without them. I have even gotten rid of a bunch of stuff since I got out here.
I am now down to the bare essentials. Even the stuff in the boxes is necessary (unless I get rid of someone, which I wont do, since its her stuff)

So, given the fact that its not that I have too much stuff, it has got to be the magnetic theory.

Hmmmm, I just figured out that if my theory is correct, there must be a corresponding place on the planet which repels everything. So is there anyone who no matter how hard they try to make a mess, just cant do it? And we are not talking compulsive behavior here or the maid cleaning up. Just that no matter how much you dont care about how the place looks, it is always immaculate.

My room just keeps getting smaller with all this old computer **** I keep bringing in to mess with.

I just brought in an "old" Compaq Proliant 2500 server in my room that my friend said he found in a community center building that he set up and teaches at for computers. Damn thing weighs probably 100 pounds. It is pretty nice. It has 5 4.3Gb SCSI drives in an array and a Pentium Pro 200 Processor. Woohoo.

It is a dual board and maybe I will add another cpu. They are like $10. hehe.

I know where one of the other places is!!! My girlfriend's appartment is one. It can't stay messy for more than 10 minutes.
I found that my messyness was directly attributable to the lack of storage space I had for all my junk. I am still in the process of sorting through it and throwing it out. You need to get those boxes out of that closet. Get some shelves in there or something. That stuff needs to go into a garage or attic or something.
Secondly you have to develop good personal habits. Get up a little earlier and straighten up a bit before leaving. Straighten up a bit when you get home. Fold clothes when they come out of the wash, always put dirty clothes in a hamper, throw things (like magazines and boxes) out as son as you are done with them. Things like that. It's the hardest part, and I am working on it now.
