Here in L.A., Chick Hearn is something of an icon. He's not like other teams announcers, the biased ones who only side with their home team. Chick calls it as he sees it and if the Lakers are playing bad he'll let you know. He's constantly praising other team players for good plays or a good game.
85-years young and had broadcast 3,338 consecutive Lakers games dating back to 1965. Five months ago poor guy had a heart valve replacement. Later after recovering he fell and broke his hip. It cost him 56 games and finally the Doctors cleared him to announce .He returned tonight to a roaring ovation. The Lakers were playing the Utah Jazz. Lakers were up by 20 before the Jazz got to within 6 and Shaq got ejected. Than the Lakers went to town and was blowing out the Jazz by 20. Chick put the game in the refridgerator(his way of saying the game is over, a "Chickism") early in the 4th and the Lakers won by 30. Welcome back Chicky and good game Lakeshow!

i make no secret of hating the lakers (now understand, i don't hold it against any of you cali people, esp those from the LA area, who root for them. they're your home team. i root for my home team, and root against teams that we've had rivalries with, like the lakers, the bulls, the celtics, etc).
anyway, chick hearn is in a whole different category. it's like cal ripkin. you just have to like a guy who shows up for work 3,338 nights in a row over a 37 year period. that is just great, imo. i was really disappointed when he went down for surgery last year and have been rooting for him to get better. so i add to the NSS -- GO CHICK! |
