S: Salary - Computer Industry
*Sigh*
Everytime i check out the Salaries for the Computer Industry I lose more and more motivation. For this very reason i had a very hard time deciding to go with "Computer Science" as my major. And now i'm starting to doubt that decision again, my only problem is that i can't think of any other alternatives. Ohh well, guess i gotta put my blinders back on and just dive in.

Yeah, it's nowhere as good as it was several years ago. However, it seems that all the non-computer people who jumped onto the computer bandwagon are now being weeded out... there is still room for people with a technical background, and this need will grow in the next few years.
The one critical thing that you must do if you want to continue in this industry (even if it pushes your graduation date back a semester or two) is to get a co-op or internship in the computer industry. Practically all large companies have some sort of internship program (and they actually pay pretty well, unlike other industries!). Even during a hiring freeze, there are still positions that come up that need to be filled. Guess who would be first in line if something comes up? Also, when you're interviewing after you graduate, experience in your field of study will put you FAR ahead of your colleagues whose experience consists of changing paper in the printers in the computer lab at school. Like every other industry, computer jobs go in cycles. It's at a low point right now, but it'll bounce back. |
