SS: Best friend killed at 22

Well, this is the first real tradgedy in my short life. Dunno quite why I'm telling the world, guess I just need to vent.

My best friend of 15 years was killed Friday night in a motorcycle accident. I'd known him since the second grade. Missed a corner, hit a tree, and was supposedly killed instantly. Coroner said 95% of the bones in his body were broken. Was wearing a helmet, but apparently that wasnt enough in this case.

He had just got back from a 5-mth Tour Of Duty in Kosovo, and had been back in town for 2 friggen days. But in that time, he got to see most of his close friends and family. Just not me. =(

Attended the funeral today. One of the worst days in my life, hands down. Had a small service, but literally hundreds of people showed up. Amazing the amount of people he had touched. They had a small prayer and speech by a Pastor, then the Honor Guard did their thing. 21-gun salute. Taps. Flag folding and presentation. When they started playing Taps, I completely lost it. Am even now as I type this.

To top it all off, this was supposed to be one of the greatest weeks of my life. Im graduating college and its my birthday tomorrow. This kinda put a negative spin on everything, especially knowing my friend won't be there.

One good thing came of all of this. It brought together the original "crew" from our school days. A few of the guys I hadnt seen in 8 or so years. Most not since graduation 4 years ago. Was really nice having all those people around again. Some traveled as from as far away as Arizona to come today. I am grateful for that.

RIP Bryan Edward Bacon

Thanks for everything Bryan

Irish,
Really sorry about your loss.
It sounds like this guy really knew how to live. US Veteran, rode a motorcycle and has you for a friend.
Condolences,
jel
ps:I think he'd want you to enjoy your graduation. Friends want good things for each other.

IrishSS, that is completely awful I'm so sorry to hear it. You must be going through some really tough times right now I'm sure. I am really sorry to hear about your loss. He was obvious one cool person to have so many peeps at his funeral. It's sad that he had to get cut down so early in his life, right when he was doing so well. I know that there is nothing I can say or write that will make you feel any better, just that I feel your pain man. I feel your pain.

On your birthday maybe you can do something that you guys would do together, and dedicate the day to him. Go to your old hangout and remember the good times you had with him back in the day. Maybe you and all your bros could do that. Do it so that you CAN remember the good times, in the midst of all the tragedy.

Good luck to your brutha.

Sorry for your loss IrishSS. Though none of us here know him, sounds like he was a great guy. Hope you can still celebrate your birthday though. He'll still be right there with you, always.

Unfortuinately this is an all to frequent occurance. When I was serving we heard about it all the time. Someone comes back off a tour and jumps in a car or on a bike and finds out a little to late that they are out of practice.

I'm sorry for your loss IrishSS. But don't mourn his death, celibrate his life! Take Jello's advice. Your friend would want you to have the best time of your life. Add now, obviously it won't be. But still try.
People who pass on leave a bit of themselves with the people they touched in their life. Generaly the best parts, wisdom, courage, hope, and love. Don't bury the part that he gave of himself with grief. Show the love that you had for your friend by trying to live your life as well as you can. So you can pass the positive influences he had on your life to someone else.

Good luck,
Have a happy birthday and a great graduation.

Good luck, Irish. Try to get through this the best you can; I'm sure that's what he would have wanted for you.

Hang in there Irish. As someone who's suffered a devistating loss recently, I can tell you it's going to get better. It's okay to mourn the loss but I think it's at least equally important to celebrate his life. Peace.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I am sure that there is nothing that can be said to make you feel better, but as Faiter said, it will get better with time.

Sorry to hear about your friend IrishSS. If it means anything, I understand how you feel, friend of mine died in a motorcycle accident the first day all of us got to college last year. Just keep your head up man. Your friend was well loved and even in his short life lived it to the fullest.

Well, on a similar note...

A girl that I knew, and grew up next door to, died in a car crash last night... She had just graduated from high school this last week.

I'm sorry SS, that's absolutely horrible.

When I was in college I had two fraternity brothers get into motorcycle accidents as well. One went off a cliff and was killed instantly, the other was seriously injured, in the hospital for six months and suffered some slight brain damage as a result.

Very sad to see loss of life with people so young.
