Thumbs down SS: Bad Book Endings!

Memoirs of a Geisha

I couldn't put down this book for the life of me ... tore through the first 400 pages, I was sooooo anxious to find out how the protagonist's story ended.

Well, the ending sucked so badly that I'm still .

Don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't read it yet ... though I'm so mad that I SHOULD! *grumble* *grumble*

I'm not sure if the ending will translate well into film, so the screenplay will be probably downplay the awful ending, or omit it altogether so you won't know what I'm so about.

Yeah, please don't ruin it, Juju...

I just started reading the book. Anyway, though, remember that it is a historical work... I guess there can't always be happy endings in life.

Please remember that cultures other than ours have different expectations than ours. What, for you, is an upsetting ending, might be considered an entirely appropriate ending for to someone in a diferent culture.

For example French film usualy have sad endings... But then of course they are the French..

my GF was reading that book, and i know she liked it, but i don't know if she every finished it (and if she finished it, i don't know what she thought of the ending).

it does suck when books/movies have endings you don't like (although a very inconclusive ending usually bothers me more than an unhappy ending).

Well, I'm about to find out what the ending is... I only have 20 pages left... but so far, the ending is looking fine to me...

I never said anything about the ending being SAD, now did I? I just didn't like it. The ending was happy, though it seemed like one of those quick-we-have-a-few-pages-left-let's-tie-it-up-neatly-with-a-bow endings.

I was actually pissed about how the protagonist treated a particular character in the book. He was nice and honest, and she was just plain MEAN and self-serving.

but you said the ending was "awful" and "sucked so badly", which to me sounded like something bad happened or something. but still, an assumption. me

i think that a lot of people think that memoirs of a geisha is a true story when, in fact, it is fictional.

It is actually historical fiction...

Anyway, I think that the ending was fine, Juju... she followed her destiny...

Note, spoilers for those who haven't read the book

Okay, she was the woman that Nobu loved because she refused to allow someone else to determine what she wanted, but ultimately, she wanted to be with the Chairman, not Nobu. So, by staying with Nobu, she was living a lie anyway, and she would never actually be the one that Nobu loved. Ironically, by pursuing a life with the Chairman and doing whatever was necessary to get their, she became the woman that Nobu idolized her to be...

Yeah, I noticed the big fat "FICTION" label on the back cover.

It had all the makings of a great story, but didn't follow through in the end, imo.

I had trouble with her relationship with the Chairman ... it didn't make sense at all, because she was in love with nothing more than a symbol. Every other character in the book is richly developed, but the Chairman remains one-dimensional. How do you proclaim it to be your "true destiny" when all you harp on are his good looks and his kind eyes? I needed at least another 100 pages to gain closure, darnit.

Haha, I guess so...

Who knows, maybe Sayuri was just shallow... get it? Water, shallow?
