NSS: Dell 2000FP

I got a Dell 2000FP LCD as posted on the deals page a few months back (for ~$1359). I've been so happy with this monitor that I thought I'd post another recommendation (over Apex's own).

This monitor rocks. Pretty darn good latency (marked improvement over first generation LCDs), DVI on from my GF3 looks incredible especially with Cleartype, analog still looks damn good, S-Video from my PS2 is awesome. I even had it setup so I could play PS2 while web browsing, or play PS2 inbetween rounds of Counter-strike with the Picture-in-Picture feature..

Scaling is awesome. 1024x768 looks great. The blur is about the equivalent to Quincunx. Not a big deal for games. I only wish it would do a direct 4:1 pixel scale for 800x600. As it stands, it does a bicubic resize rather than retain sharpness. Not a big deal. Again in games I think the filter is probably better. Not like I'm going to set my desktop resolution to anything but 1600x1200.

For the extra $200 over the 19" I think it is worth having the 1600x1200 native resolution. The scaling to 1024x768 on a 1600x1200 display is superb, whereas scaling 1280x1024 to 1024x768 wouldn't look nearly as good. Good news since I play most games at 1024x768.

Color saturation is awesome. With the ICM color profile installed it holds its own against the best CRTs. Contrast isn't quite as good as a top-of-the-line Trinitron, but it still serves very well. Brightness is superb. It lights up my room as well as the old Nokia 445X that it replaced.

I only have one noticably bad pixel. About halfway between the center of the screen and the bottom left corner there is a pixel stuck on full blue. I only notice it on a completely pitch black background.

If you can drop the $1100 on it I think it is a good investment for use, even if it will retain little equity in coming years. I fully expect this monitor to last me 6-8 years, at which time I'll probably swap out the backlights and retire it to one of my secondary computers in favor of a new 22" LCD depending on how LCD technology moves forward in the coming years.

I was a few minutes late for getting in on the deal, with the $150 coupon, and 20% off. Got on G|A around 11:53pm, and had to make a quick decision. After doing all the clicking, it was too late, coupon expired. Not sure if it was good or bad that I didn't get in on it. But $1100 is a crapload to spend on just a monitor.
