IMHO. the glory days of the Stock Market are over. While I watched everyone brag about their investments in the Market a few years ago, I sorta snickered when everything fell apart over a year ago.
It was bound to happen. Fortunately, because of the fears of Y2K, I dumped my few market investments in the Fall of 2000.

I work for an investment company, and these folks are talking about how it's looking like the 70's when the market was flat for a long time. It's hard to say that we deserve this, but if the market wasn't so high on dot-coms which lost money by the boatload, we wouldn't be in this mess.

The stock market rise was a scam allowed by the loosening of restrictions on the market by the government. A bunch of snake oil salesmen convinced the American public that they could all have a great free ride by buying their elixirs. Free lunch anyone? People got what they deserved for being greedy. Rich people don't get rich by giving away money.. they get rich by taking yours.

Free Market does not mean "anything goes" it means that people can buy and sell as they choose. Proper regulation and monitoring of the stock market is necessary.

Remember, the market is not a forgiving place. If you don't know what you are doing someone else WILL eat your lunch. With the bull market of the mid and late nineties quite a few people bought stocks who really had no business being in the market. This was an accident just waiting to happen.

Before you invest make sure you understand not only the investment but also the investing process.
