Just needing to ramble -- June sucks

Came home from work this morning. Mom called. Her neighbor had passed away earlier (about 30 min prior to her calling me.) Jim has lived next to mom and dad, well, before mom and dad moved into their house. He was always there when you needed him. When my dad was sick in the hospital when I was growing up, he was there for mom and us kids. Even when dad was drinking when I was little, I remember him helping out mom.

He took care of the neighborhood. He would take a walk everyday around "our two blocks" and made sure people like Virgina, a widow, was okay. He helped me learn to ride my bike. And when I got older, he helped my dad chase my dates away .

When I got older and moved away from the neighborhood, he would always straggle over and say hello, and as he got older, I would go there. I couldn't go home without talking with him. I learned everytime something new.

Just over 4 years ago, I was home and learned he was getting really sick. It was tough because he got real sick real fast there for a bit and June 6th of that year I lost my Granny. I didn't want to think about losing Jim.

Jim was a grandparent to me. More so than my father's father, my mom, after hearing me say that this morning said that dad had said the same thing (Jim was more of a father to dad than dad's father was).

I hate being far from IL right now. I really do. What I wouldn't give to be in that damn town, sitting in Jim's back yard in his swing talking about anything with him.

Chrissy you were very lucky to know a true hero. Not someone who just happend to be in the right place at the right time, but someone who spent his life improving the lives of others and safeguarding them. They are few and far between.

I am very sorry for your loss. Know that he still lives on through you and any good works you do.

chrissy, i'm so sorry to hear about your loss.

there are really so few truly good people in the world who just want to make life better for other people. your neighbor really sounds like one of those people......and i'm sorry his life is over.
