SS: Palm (Handhelds) -- Long --

A while back, I decided I needed a PDA, and ended up purchasing the Palm m125. It seemed like a great deal at $299 (Canadian), but now I am not so sure.

The first handheld I purchased had a defective digitizer. For some reason, I was always having to re-calibrate the display every few days, as the accuracy just seemed to go downhill. Thinking this was just my bad luck (I'm a sucker when it comes to buying a defective product -- everything from my first scanner, to CD-Writer ended up being DOA), I decided to exchange it for a new one.

Everything seemed fine for about a month, when all of a sudden I started getting Fatal Exception errors. After a quick e-mail to Palm, I received a reply stating how to hopefully isolate the problem. Their solution seemed to work......... until recently.

Now, the handheld is virtually useless -- corrupting and/or losing data quite often. I've been fighting with Palm for a few weeks now trying to get this thing fixed, but nothing's been done yet (e-mail responses are extremely slow (when they respond at all).

Today however, things took a rather amusing turn. I received an e-mail regarding a customer satisfaction survey relating to my telephone support call with a specified Palm support rep. Funny thing is, I've never received a call from Palm on the issue, nor have I phoned them (their tech support # isn't toll free). The e-mail in question also indicated my particular case was closed on June 7th, 2002 (a fact which was unknown to me, but does coincide with the last e-mail I received stating to send them my shipping address (something I've sent to them several times since).

Needless to say, I'm currently stuck with a $300 (Canadian) paperweight -- and I'm not too happy. Even if Palm does finally pull through and replace/repair my unit, it probably will do little to improve my opinion of them.

Well, looks like this story "might" have a happy ending after all.

I received a note today from their warranty company (it appears to be outsourced from Palm) with complete shipping info for my Palm. I pay for shipping to them, they pay to ship back a replacement unit.
