Then I guess we'll never know...

Different viewpoint on this issue !

Hey guys,

As a purchasing manager for a large Panasonic Direct New York City electronics store, I saw the Panasonic dvd camcorder deal here as everyone else did ... i called my panasonic rep and yelled at him - "why werent we offered this deal ?"

Panasonic's responce was "The model in question was last years model, with a list price of $2300. It was a closeout to a company on the west coast - they paid $900. How it got to Amazon - we dont know."

Im not gonna get in the middle of "should amazon have acted better - many here have said thier thoughts - most better than i can/could"

What I will say is - who ever got it - should consider themselves lucky as hell - it was an incredible deal - getting $1200 technology for $488. The only thing remotely close are Hitachi madels that cost $1200 + .......

Exclamation File with the Washington State Attorney General

I was not "wronged" by this deal - but did try to take advantage of it only to get to the site too late.

I have read this entire post and do not dare choose a side at this point (not enough information - only speculation). But, some of you seem to want to do something with your complaints aside from emailing customer support at Amazon and sending a complaint to the BBB of Washington.

From a legal standpoint, anyone that ACTUALLY COMPLETED an order (please do not waste the AGO's time otherwise) and feels "wronged" by the outcome or actions of Amazon.com should file a complete and honest report with the Washington State Attorney General's office at:

https://wws2.wa.gov/ago/formhandler/regularca3.html
(Don't be put off by the horrible coloring - it's a real form. The colors are actually for specific types of information required.)

This form is for general complaints, and is applicable because Amazon.com is headquartered in Seattle, WA. Therefore, Washington State law can apply even if you are a resident of another state. The Attorney General's Office enforces the Consumer Protection Act in the state of Washington (among many other services) and will have proper jurisdiction over any problems (if they exist) regarding this transaction.

Be honest, be complete, and at the very least, you will get a reply to your compaint in the future (allow a few months for processing - they are VERY busy). Remember, the state of Washington also has Microsoft, Boeing, and many other large corporations within its borders. Therefore, processing may be slow - but they have yet to refuse any of my complaints.

Thumbs down Amazon.com Fails Me.....

Just got off the phone with Bradley Cross, a senior account specialist. He apologized & stood firm that there was nothing that he could do for me at all. I asked for a substitution, he said "Amazon.com is not willing to take that kind of a loss for a customer". I have spent many times that amount on goods from Amazon.com. I will be cancelling & closing my Amazon.com account promptly & do business with more reputable organizations such as Buy.com, Best Buy, & Even Circuit City. They ALL will honor their pricing, or at least give substitutions!!!!!! I asked about at least a gift card....they said "this situation does not merit that". O.K. Great. Goodbye Amazon.com. I asked for a name or email of someone who actually DID get a camera & he would not give me that info...yet Amazon.com sells your info, he said that was true, but I couldn't have a name. I asked if they actaully DID have any of these cameras in stock & he said yes. I asked for a number & he paused.....he said "around 26", so there must be SOMEONE out there that actually has had their order go through.....anybody, anybody, buler?

Pretty much the same result as everyone else. But, for you reference, here is their reply to my BBB complain.
******************************************************************
My name is Brad Cross and I am a member of the Customer Relations
team at Amazon.com. I am writing to you in response to a complaint
we have received from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) on your
behalf. I will include the BBB in our correspondence.

First, please let me apologize for the frustration caused by the
cancellation of your order for the Panasonic DVD Camcorder. For the
purposes of this email, let me re-state what happened:

The item was listed as available on our website, and you placed an
order for it.

Before we could fill your order, we found that we had run out of
inventory.

Ordinarily, at this point, we would obtain new inventory and either
honor the price you purchased it at or, at our discretion, increase
or decrease the price based on supply and demand and request your
approval of the price change. However, in this case, the item was on
sale specifically because it was not being made anymore. Therefore,
your order was cancelled because we don't believe we will ever
receive more inventory.

I think there may be some confusion about the way the item is
displayed on our website. While we do display "Our Price" and the
lowest price the item is available from a third party seller is
listed on the detail page for the item, this is in no way meant to
imply that we have the item for sale. Let me explain:

We do display "Our Price", which for this item is currently listed
at $2,299.99. This is a price at which we have sold the item in the
past, usually the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price. This
feature is useful for potential buyers attempting to compare the
ballpark retail price of an item with the price they would pay were
they to place an order with one of the sellers in our Marketplace.
Again, it
is not intended to imply that we are selling the item at this or any
price. I'm sorry if this caused confusion.

I know that there is a great deal of misinformation being
communicated about this sale in particular. I'd like to reiterate to
you that we are truthfully representing the following facts:

1) The camcorder was correctly listed on our website at the price of
$488.88.

2) It was a great deal, and we sold out.

3) Many orders were placed after we had sold out and before we were
able to update the availability of the item on our website.

4) We cancelled those orders and informed our customers that we
would
not be able to obtain this item for them.

I understand that you placed your order with the expectation that we
would be able to fill it, and again, I apologize for the
disappointment this has caused. If you have any further concerns
regarding this order, I urge you to contact me directly at
resolution@amazon.com.

Best regards,

David Bradley Cross

all of a sudden, things make a lot more sense.

26?!??!? no wonder there are about 2 million people out there who got screwed. those were probably gone in LITERALLY 30 seconds or less.

what it really sounds like is that either there was an error in the system about how many cameras they had, or else they really need to improve the link between their inventory database and their website, making it closer to a real-time connection.

amazing....
