My car

So my car has been in and out of the shop for weeks now, and finally the mechanic tells me the fuel pump needs to be changed! I guess he tested it when the problems began, and it wasn't that bad - but when the fuel pressure is supposed to be at 32 cpi and it's at 20 in my car...well I call that a problem!

I did get it fixed and it's never driven to well! $450 later...I will admit it right now, I am SO glad my mom is there for me because if I didn't have a nice mother, I wouldn't be driving a car right now. And don't think I'm spoiled because for the most part I pay for my own stuff (gas, clothes, insurance), but she helps me out of holes here and there. THAT'S what parents are there for..to help, but not to wipe your butt!

It sure is nice to have parents to help you out every once in a while. I know my parents have helped me to get out of many unforseen financial jams. Just a quick question though. Did you atleast offer to pay her back? Its always a nice jesture even if you know they dont expect a dime back.

I have to agree that if you paid $450 to get your fuel pump fixed that maybe they took you for a ride. I would call around and get estimates at other places or better yet have your dad call the same place and get an estimate for a fuel pump replacement. I know my wife always gets higher estimates when she calls or takes our vehicles to get repaired so I always do it when I can.

I always have the problem where they try to rip me off no matter where I take my car....

Even if it's just to get my oil changed they always try to get me to do other things that cost atleast $ 100.... I'm like no that's ok, I'll have my dad or boyfriend look at it, and they try to get me to replace things with their stuff and I'm like no I will deal with it later, I may be a girl but that doesn't mean you are going to screw me over and take my money....

but shortstack, I agree with everyone $ 450 is a bit much.... If you find someone else could have done it for cheaper is there anyway to get like your money back or something? AND your lucky that you have your parents to help you out when you need it, cuz from what I know for you, it's not often

I agree with sbp and SonyGuy. Even with labor, no fuel pumb should be that much. Also, did they check for other possiblities? From what I've seen mechanics do, they will fix the most expensive possible problem first, and if that doesn't take care of it, they will move on to the next most possible problem.

It actually might be a good idea if you brought Corsec along with you. A guy is less likely to be taken advantage of than a woman, and a guy in working clothes is less likely to be taken advantage of than a guy in dress clothes.

HaHa I had a feeling that Linky would lead to that song. That whole Adam Sandler CD cracks me up.

Well - no, I really don't think he took advantage of me. I've been taking my car to this guy since we got it a few months ago, and first - I took it to him to make sure the car was ok before I bought it. He had it all day, did a bunch of tests on it, and didn't charge a dime. Trust me, he isn't screwing us over because there has been several times he has done stuff for free. I mean, one time I left the car there and he TOOK IT HOME WITH HIM to see how it drove on the freeway. The problem I was having with it was going on for a very long time, and this finally fixed it. He didn't charge me for the other stuff he did to it. He did all of these other tests and didn't charge me until he fixed it. So really, he did much more work than he got paid for. Also, Corsec was with me on all of this & my mom and stepdad spoke with him on most of it.

One more thing about the pump - he got the pump from Nissan and that itself cost 309 bucks, plus labor. His labor charge is about 50 an hour so that took him two hours to put in? Plus with all of the other work he did without getting paid (including WAITING for it...he refused money until it was fixed), I think I wasn't cheated.

And yes, I do payback my mom. I am very thankful for her help.

Like I said above, Corsec was with me. And, like I said before, we did fix smaller things first (most of it without pay), but none of the smaller things did much good. My car still ran like crap. So it finally got to this. Also, he was very honest and said "I want to try the smaller things first because I'd hate to make you pay for the more expensive things and that not be the problem." I know most guys are sexist a--holes, but he isn't.

I just go to the dealer. Higher price perhaps, but also you know you wont get ripped off for needless repairs.
