When you borrow stuff, take care of it!

I was kind enough to offer a book of mine to a classmate in my speech class because it had some good essays on abortion, which his speech happens to be on. I felt the essays had a different way to look at the whole issue and thought it'd be neat to let him read them. (I'd personally love it if someone did that to me).

Well, he doesn't return them to me in the next class, which makes me a little upset. Um, no...I don't NEED them for my class. (And yes, I told them they were for my class, but that I didn't need them for that weekend). And then when I finally say the next class that I'll just photocopy the articles for him (since he hadn't even glanced at the stuff), he gave me back the book sort of screwed up with some of the pages bent. Not like I need to sell this particular book back or anything, but I really like this book and shouldn't you be more careful with other people's things?

I know I had alternative things I could have done, and it's not that big of a deal...but everytime I pick up the book I'm just a little annoyed.

i got one of those exscuses today when someone at work returned the book, "Children of the Mind" to me. This was after he had had it for an additional week because he told me, "I gave it back to you dude, you must have it somewhere."

Are you serious baby? That totally sucks...people are dumb! I think that's why I'm reluctant to lend things how to strangers...I guess I just figured I was helping the guy out, and honestly it's not a huge deal because it's a book for class. I'm sure it's not something I'll "treasure" for the rest of my life, but this is the PRIME example I would never lend out my Disney collection. (that is my most prized possession). No one touched MY Disney movies...besides, I have enough trouble losing them on my own.

I agree that people should be extra careful when they borrow stuff. The thing to understand though is accidents could happen no matter how careful or what steps the person takes. The rule I live by is if I couldnt stand not to have the item, damaged or otherwise, I wouldnt lend it out.

Thats just my philosopy though.

Before I borrow something from someone else, I am under the impression that that is how it is going to be and I treat that item as if it were my own.

Accidents happens. I would like it returned in the same condition I gave it out. It could be worse...I lent someone one of my books and it came back highlighted!!!!

I never highlighted my books b/c it seemed everything was important. I would just read it through. Go back and make an outline of all the chapters I had to read. And study from my outline. Worked for YEARS!!!

Anyways...if he was remorseful at least buy you lunch or something.

I agree with that 100% but if its accidental then you should be open to just sucking it up especially if its still usable and is only a cosmetic defect. Now if they purposly defaced the book (highlight words) then that may be a different story. Personnaly I dont lend out things I dont want damaged at all or that can be easily damaged. This is why I will never lend out things like my vehicle

The point I am trying to make is "**** Happens" I dont expect to have my stuff replaced if its minor damage to inexpensive items. Especially if its 1. a friend 2. doesnt lose any functionality 3. could occur from normal usage.

Granted if I borrow items from a friend and something happened to it whether accidental or not I will always make it up to them one way or another.

Sorry shortstack, but that's what you get for being nice to people. Nice people deserve what they get. You should've known better. As for me, what I do is that I expect people to be selfish. Heck, our whole economic system is based on that. I won't lend stuff out with any expectation that I will get it back. If I am partial to it... I just won't lend it to people. That way, if I get it back, it's a bonus good. If not... I saw it coming. I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm being mean to you. That was not my intention (although now that I'm rereading this it does sound kinda mean). It's just that that's how people are. Here's my advice on how to deal with people.

Assume the worst. If you assume the best in people, you'll find out you're wrong and be disappointed/unhappy. If you assume the worst in people, you'll still find out that you're wrong, but heck... it'll be a good thing. I'd rather be wrong and happy then wrong and sad.

I feel for you. I let me friend borrow my letter box set of John Woo's The Killer and Hard Boiled staring Chow Yan Fat. Which was cool, but when I got it backthe box was bent and one of the jackets had a rip in it. I was mad but then again I'll never let that friend borrow something of mine again.
