SS: An old Friend and Mentor has Bone Cancer

I found out about 6 months ago that an old friend, neighbor and mentor (he was one of the big reasons I went into engineering) has bone cancer. He was having some sciatica problems and went in to find out he had a tumor on his spine putting pressure on his spinal column. It had started to spread to some of the surrounding tissue and he initially didn't have a very good prognosis. He vowed to fight on with every ounce of his being. He has a very strong family (I grew up with his son and two daughters - his son was one of my groomsmen in my wedding) and they have been very supportive throughout his fight so far.

Fast forward to now - he's still fighting and I honestly think he might beat it. I've never known my friend Richard to back down from anything (he is still working believe it or not) and his prognosis is looking better. It just sucks seeing this happen to a friend and mentor for so many years. If anything, this has made me look again at my own mortality and priorities. If anything, remember to go to the doctor for a checkup!

And the light that fills the world.

Good luck to your friend. With his good attitude, he's won half the battle!
