Getting fired: the top 10 internet misusers at my company

I got word that the top 10 internet misusers will be fired, or something to that effect. Last Friday, I was researching bowling shoes at work while Solaris was installing in a Sun box I was working on. I'm sure that looked pretty bad!

Needless to say, I'm on my lunch hour at home right now getting my fix

Hmm good luck ski. And i wonder how they rank internet misuse. I can work fast and do all my goofing off in like an hour. But i probably hit more sites then other people in my office who goof off for like 4 hours...
Hmm i'd be curious to see if it was people who went to the most messed up websites, or just combined time sitting on a non work website. That would be funny, cause then someone who got sick in the middle of the day and left their computer on could get fired cause their internet misuse exceeded their work hours for the week.

Well, It's past 5, I'm at home, that's why I didn't respond

We aren't sure if it's my company's building, all my company's locations, Tyco Electronics, or Tyco Int'l. Could be out of 250,000 employees that Tyco has. Or could be out of 300 that my building has

I don't want to risk it, but I don't see anything wrong with checking Slashdot, weather, or email while you're waiting on someone to get back to you or an installation.

Oh sure . . . of all the people Tyco should be worrying about firing, it's the 10 people who "misuse the internet" . . .

damn, that's crazy. i would also be curious as to how they'll measure the worst "misusers."

whatever the case, i think they should be worried about whether employees accomplish the work they're supposed to and perform up to expectations. besides that, who cares if they're on /.?

Yeah, lots of people have signs that say "PAY UP, DENNIS!" (old CEO, $600 million+ on his personal account, he's prooooobably going to jail)

Surfing the internet is one thing, but surfing the internet viewing illegal content (ie: child porn) is another. When our merger occured there was a worldwide audit of the newly created company. I know 1 person who was laid off for flagrant violations of company computer use rules and viewing blatantly illegal information.

My buddy works for a large corporation, & one of his duties is to check for violations of their internet policy. They have some very nice tracking systems in place, and yes, they can see just about everything that goes on.

He says the only people they really crack down on are the ones spending 6+ hours a day surfing, or anyone viewing porn on a regular basis, or anyone caught doing something they CLEARLY shouldn't be doing, like gambling, kiddie porn, stalking people, etc. Everyone else usually gets a warning & then it stops. But some people can't stay away from the internet. The beautiful, beautiful internet. Ohh, the lovely words, the pretty pictures, the interesting... wait, never mind. I gotta go.

I might buy that if there weren't 5 of them that it happened to. Most likely they were warned a few times. But I am sure that any of the companies that I have worked for would warn you once and then they would fire you for something like that.

Most porn traffic is during work hours (8-5)

LIterally just going to sites that were inappropriate. Then having those sites blocked, and hunting for new sites. And being told, STOP DOING IT... and then finding more sites, and then well game over.
