or maybe hold your breathe. or take deep breathes... isn't it the spasming of like your lung or muscles behind your lungs... if you try and stretch it out you should be better.

OMG I had the hiccups once for THREE DAYS. Pure hell. Believe me, I tried every remedy known to man, and nothing helped. I was surfing the net at 3AM, trying every silly thing out there. Just had to wait them out.

Hopefully yours aren't as bad!

If you eat some chocolate, it should get rid of them. It works every time for me.

hold your breath, while drinking water (don't know if it will work with other liquids, like beer). usually, after 7 sips, hiccups are long gone.

Some people suggest drinking water out of the wrong side of a glass (i.e., you have to bend over as you drink).

wash your hands and touch the hangy ball in the back of your mouth - it's weird but it works for me

Thanks everyone for your great, if not weird (Lolita ) suggestions. Fortunately they're gone now. I think it was a couple of hours before they went away, and I just wound up waiting them out. *sigh* Hiccups suck!

the "hangy ball"
sorry Lolita, but that strikes me as funny. i've had a few people call it the "hangy down thing".

it's your uvula... which sounds kinda naughty.

My uncle taught me this trick when I was 14 and it has never failed me. Grab a glass of water and have someone help you out. Have the other person plug your ears with their fingers and begin drinking at a slow rhythmic pace. Don't take your mouth off the glass, even if you need to breathe. If you have to breathe, take a breath through your nose, but don't break the pace of your swallows. Finish the glass and they should be gone. Ok, this might sound strange and I have no scientific explanation for why it works, but it does. I guarantee it...

That's interesting. Maybe I'll try that the next time I get them.

Hiccups can be really, really annoying. I've seen Thorazine used in some patients with intractable hiccups. Kinda extreme, but it works.
