SS: Being grounded

this sucks major a$$.

got called into my the office of the head of OEM sales yesterday. got in there and he, my old manager, and a co-worker are looking at a print out of my calendar. (i was 2 hours late getting into the office btw and met my panicky secretary telling me to get to his office.)

he said, what does your calendar look like for the next few weeks? uh oh. well...i was planning on taking a customer this week on a fishing trip (my very FIRST boondogle!). he looks and says, you're probably going to have to cancel the tour de georgia that you have in a couple weeks. (lol. he thought i was touring georgia visiting customers. i told him that it's a bike race and i had hoped to see lance armstrong race for a final time in the US.)

i guess our department is fairly resource-strapped and they need me to bring the entire sales dept. up to compliance with ISO/TS 16949. ????? are you ****ing kidding me? first, i don't know WTH it is, and i sure don't want to be stuck in my office for the next month pouring over, and creating procedural documentation. additionally, i have a balanced score card reflects certain achievements and if i am losing 1/10 of my year, it's going to be a lot harder to hit certain targets.

i smiled and said sure. it will be a good opportunity to add this to my skillset and.....blah blah blah.

That does suck....not so much b/c you don't know the ISO standard which will require you to learn it and will make you a more valuable employee but b/c you will be missing out on a huge chunk of the year which will effect your sales bonus. And, in my opinion, more importantly it will probably mean no sushi in B-more for you for a while.

ISO whatever is a big ole pain in the ass. We got some standard forms from a friend and modified them. Any monkey can write the manual. Or at least that's what I was told before my boss forgot about it. Let me know how it goes for your company.
I still may have to set it up.

Our company strives to be "ISO compliant".

well, i had a 2-3 hour meeting with this uber-cool guy that handles much of this stuff. he introduced me to the ISO concept, and what we are trying to do. fortunately, much of the work has been done. i just need to review the audit of our department, fix the gaps in our processes, and complete the procedural documentation that is lacking. he basically promised to hold my hand the whole way.

all the paper here in japan is pretty much iso size. you can't find letter size paper, only a4, b5, etc.

Glad to hear that. I had to help with the ISO compliance at my last company and I did not like it.
