Grades, and the such mostly.
When I was looking at the school that we are zoned for, it was nice and all. But I have a friend whose daughters (she has 4) who all have gone to magnet schools. She suggested I look into them. (she is also Audie's leader in Girl Scouts) I was also approched by Audrey's teacher to look into, specifically, these two schools. I sat her down and talked to her about all the options, including friends, activities and left the choice to apply up to her. She wanted to try it out. (It was an afterthought to talk to Bires to see if he had an opinion about the two, but anyway) We applied to both and just recieved the letters (for the other school she didn't make the lottery, but was qualified). This is what the web page says about Hyde Quote:

First off, since this seems to be a good thing, congrats! I hope this works out like you both think it will.
Secondly.....Magnet school? I think I have heard of these/charter schools recently on the news, but I am not really sure what they are. I am guessing that its a program that focuses on specific areas and trys to bring the students up to a higher proficiency level on those subjects. (I.e. - Take students who do well in these subjects and bring them to this school, thereby the magnet, and then teach them more intensly -- is that right?) I guess the world really has changed for the worst since I was in school. For clarification I attended public schools, but frankly my public school was supposedly the equivalent of most higher end private schools. For example, my graduating class in HS was 125 people, with 100% grad rate. The entire school was 500 people and generally the largest class only had 20 people in it. I forget what the student/teacher ratio was but I know it was really good. Our scores beat almost all of the local prep schools, but then again given the area, the decision between public/private was purely based on perception.

congratz!
i started going to a magnet school during the second grade, which was also primarily focused on the math and sciences. to me, it didn't seem too different from the local public school that i had been attending previous to that, but i was only 6 at the time.. |

Well, thanks to all I am proud of her. She loves science and as I have posted before, she want to be a vet. For me, schools have changed for the worse also. But where I had a HS that was 7-12 grades with maybe 600 kids total, my class had about 30ish graduate we were offered NOTHING. We didn't have anything extra. We had basketball and pepband (because you had to have that if you had basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball. Cheerleading for those and that was it. No drama, no wood shop, no cooking/sewing, nothing but the core stuff. This is a really neat chance that I didn't want her to miss out on. I want her to be able to succeed in her dreams. If she doesn't like it, she stomachs it through this year and goes back to Findley next year for 7th grade. She is so excited about it. I am not sure, ufc, why it would be bad to have a normal middle school curriculum with a heavy on science and math? I mean, yes more schools should be that way, if not all schools. Maybe that is what you mean, but I am reading it wrong? |
