S/NSS: ReplayTV HD says goodbye, so now Kevster has a Replay 5300!

Well my my refurbished ReplayTV 5080's primary HD (the one it came with) died in spectacular fashion last night after Mrs. Kevster watched Desperate Housewives.

I went to watch the another recorded show real quick before I went to bed and the replayTV unit was completely unresponsive. I rebooted it from the power-reset button on the front and it gave me the initial startup screen and didn't do anything after that. After checking the AVS forums for some clues to this new "feature", it appeared the HD software image was corrupted/gone. I pulled the Maxtor HD out of it and checked the manufacturing date: 05 November 2002. Anyone want to guess how long the warranty was for this HD after I checked with Maxtor? Just for kicks I ran it through the Maxtor HD tools and it was indeed dead. Fortunately I make regular backups of the stuff I want to keep, so I didn't lose much. What I did lose was all the programming I had in it, which took me a while to go through and redo.

I needed to get a new HD, so I decided to go big since Fry's had a rebate deal going on the nice Seagate 300GB 7200 PATA drives. With a cost of $99 after rebate (plus tax) and a five year warranty I couldn't go wrong. Now I have a shiny and new (to me, anyway) ReplayTV 5300 with commercial advance! Also, you can now say I am well versed on the upgrade & restoral hacks/procedures for ReplayTVs now.

HA HA! I just saw that ad today. Good Job! (even if it is Fry's)

Strange - I just looked at last Friday's ad for my local Fry's, and that drive is $90 after rebate (plus tax) there.

You're right. I just checked my receipt and they charged me 139.99, not the 149.99 that was on the sticker. Well, with tax included it'll be back over $100, but still it's a good deal, especially since this is my DVR drive.

If anyone else has a ReplayTV they would like to upgrade, let me know and I'll help you out.
