Computer specs:
CPU - AMD Athlon K7 650MHz Motherboard - Asus K7M Video Card - Creative Labs TNT2 Ultra w/ TV Out Sound Card - Turtle Beach Montego II Quadzilla Network Card - Linksys LNE100TX Hard Drive - Quantum Fireball 8.4GB 5400RPM RAM - 128MB PC100 SDRAM CDROM - Creative Labs 52mx CDRW - Hewlett Packard 8100i with all of the latest drivers/bios versions okay i stumbled upon whats causing my lockups in 3d games (mostly just quake3) its my network card, i have no idea why but when i have a network card installed, i've tried 3 different pci network cards and they all cause quake3 to lock up. i've even tried using all of the different pci slots (not all at once of course). the network card has irq#10 right now and the video card has icq#11 so they arent sharing an irq or anything. does anyone have any idea whats going on here? |

This maybe farfetched, but your video card may be overheating. Does this happen with every 3-D game?

no, this does not happen in all games but about 90% of the time i try to play quake3 i'm stopped by it locking up instead of me wanting to stop.
i would say baldur's gate 2 with 3d turned on locks up the fastest, followed by quake 3. counterstrike, which i play the most rarely locks up and those lockups are infrequent enough to contribute to something else like win98se not being so stable. |

try this:
take everything out except the Video card. If your not using anything USB, go into the BIOS and shut off its IRQ. Go to windows safemode (hit F8 several times right before windows starts to load, and select option 3) and check for duplicate / ghost devices in the device manager (Windows key+Pause). If you see listings for devices you don't have/use, delete them, one by one. If you see duplicate listings for a device, delete all listings for that device, and then reboot into windows normal mode and let windows reinstall the drivers. Go to Start > Run > type MSCONFIG, hit enter. Select "Selective Startup". You should safely be able to uncheck Config.sys, Autoexec.bat, and Load Startup Group Items. (basically, you want do siable any and all unnecessary items loading at startup... you can be more selective by clicking on the Startup tab at the top and unchecking items. I suggest killing any antivirus utilities or crashguard utilities, AIM, ICQ, etc, for these tests). Save your changes. Reboot once again, and try playing your game. No lockups? Good. Now install the soundcard. I suggest you do NOT install any cards in the PCI next to the AGP slot since it usually ends up sharing IRQ's and other resources with the AGP slot. Still working? Install the Nic (reboot after each install and test of course). lockups? are you overclocking?

well my system specs have changed slightly.
my video card is now a ati radeon 64meg vivo card. i tried what you said and it seems that the sound card is what is causing the problems. i tried putting a diamond mx300 in it but its giving me the same problems, ive also tried various pci slots with the sound card. is using irq # 12 and the video card is on irq # 11 so i dont think thats the problem. anyone have any idea how to fix this? maybe my system doesnt like aureal? |

hehe... possibly! mine didn't - i just finally used an old SB16 ISA.
(I think this is where I'm supposed to try to promote the companies SB Live! series of cards - anyways, we just bought out Aureal, and you probably won't get anymore techsupport from them anyways) |
