I got a cable modem last year.. and ran a PHAT ASS server on it.. after getting caught.. and being booted off.. i decided to get DSL.. cause of the dedicated connection...
I got that stupid PACBELL DSL... it comes with a dynamic IP... basically.. I'm just having trouble setting up my router... I have a linksys router...one port... and a hawking HUB.. I connected the DSL modem to the router.. and the router to the hub. I then connected 2 computers to the hub, like I had with the cable.. the only problem is .. PACBELL dsl requires you to log on to this STUPID thing called ENTERNET 300... so .. when I try to log on... it just hangs... and nothing happens... nay suggestions?/ email me at geru222@pacbell.net thanks |

solution
if you have the linksys etherfast cable/dsl router in which you say you do have, whether it is 1, 4, or 5 port .. here is what to do..
plug the cat 5 cable from the hub to the uplink slot.. go to your browser 4.0 and higher go to 192.168.1.1 default password should be admin leave login empty enter your username and password in the example... ELN/username@earthlink.net hit enable on both options.. do this for EVERY computer in the network pacbell is not the problem it's your configuration. |

i have pacbell dsl and a linksys router... my connection has been working great. first of all, don't use the enternet program that pacbell gives you. what you want to do is type in the address area in Internet Explorer, http://192.168.1.1 then a window should pop up asking for a user name and password... leave the user name area blank and put admin for the password (note this is assuming you haven't changed the default settings). then in the router settings. you want to enable PPPoe. enter your user name for pacbell (essentially your email without the "@pacbell.net") and enter your password for your account. then apply the changes. now assuming that PPPoe option isn't in your settings, you need to upgrade your router software... just go to linksys and download the new software and then do all the stuff i said above. hope this helps ya out. if you still have trouble just message again :-)

oh i also forgot... make sure that dhcp is enabled on the router... and for all the computers on your network, make sure that they're set to use dhcp and also to automatically obtain IP address.

I recommend WinPoet as a PPPoe client... worked for me.
I heard that PacBell is using NAT now. Is this true? |

this is what i did:
- unplugged everything - reconnected everything - set up router through 192.168.1.1 - enable PPPoE - enabled DHCP - put in PPPoE username & pass WITHOUT @pacbell.net - left the FIRST 2 field BLANK - went to check status - disabled PPPoE from My computer - WAS connected WITH a WAN IP! this is what resulted: - AOLIM signed ON.. but kept on signing ON & OFF - Outlook express didn't work - couldn't surf the net any clues?? --==-- |

you know i got problems like this at first... i just had to upgrade the firmware... if you have the 1 port dsl router then here's the link to the firmware upgrade
ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/befsr41/befsr136.zip you might have to set all the settings again cause sometimes it resets your settings when you upgrade the firmware. for internet explorer, go into internet options and on the connections tab remove anything within the connections area. then click on the LAN settings button. unclick anything that is in there. now click ok to get out of all of that... you'll probably have to restart your computer to get it to work, it won't prompt you. just restart it anyways, then when you get back in, it should work alright. hope this works for ya. if not just post again and i'll try and think of something :-) |

oh also one other thing... go into the router settings by doing the same thing as before with 192.168.1.1 then go to the tab that says dhcp. now on the number of users make sure it's a number larger than the number of computers you have on your network.

I have to use the same Enternet 300 software with Ameritech.net - it's a hassle. I don't know why they can't just let you use Dial-Up Networking.
Anyway, I was wondering what type of DSL modem you guys got from Pacbell, and if is any good? The one I got from Ameritech is pretty shoddy (Westell) - it drops my connection about 3-4 times a week, and I was thinking about trying a different modem. Anyone have any luck swapping to a different modem? |

The firmware upgrade is a must! I even had trouble getting an FTP server to be visible outside the firewall before I upgraded the firmware (the the BEFSR41 - the 4 port Linky) NOTE: The firmware upgrade that DPvball pointed to will work for the 1 port and 4 ports versions. I've heard some bad things about v1.36 though, so keep a good copy (v1.34) handy if you need to re-flash. Also, v1.35 (the version I'm using) is pretty stable too.
