Angry

Hi, Any help would be appreciated. I've been reinstalling software on my pc and every thing was fine. However, once I loaded office 97 (word, xcel, and powerpoint), two instances of FindFast appear in processes tab. When I defrag, it would constantly reset itself. When I "End Task" on one of the "Find Fast" the defrag works. This didn't happen two days ago. By the way I'm running WIndows 98. Can anyone offer any help?
Thanks in advanced.

Hi Thanks... but how do I remove it? Also, I installed this before in the same pc but I never had findfast working in the background like that. How the hell did it get installed in the first place? Thanks for your help.

let me rephrase

Opps, I meant to say I just installed Office a week ago on my old hard drive. It finally crashed so last night I put in a new hard disk, reformated it, and started reinstalling software. When I installed the Office the find fast problem occurred. How was it installed? I haven't changed any microsoft office settings when I installed.

I'm on my office computer, which does not have find fast (possibly the stupidest program of all time), but if memory serves me correctly, I believe it is in the add/remove list. Am I wrong?

Often, a reinstall of Office in Custom mode will allow you to pick and choose. If it's really that much of a problem to shut one of the findfast's down before you defrag (and I thought you were supposed to close everything except the systray and explorer before you defrag anyway) you can uninstall office, re-install it in custom, and voila! Properly working defrag.

This is coming from perhaps the LEAST technically inclined "captain" in the room, so take that with a grain of salt.

custom install

No, i's not in add/remove. Yes, I have been doing a custom install on all the pieces of Office. I also wasn't aware you were suppose to "end task" everything except explorer and systray. I just don't want it on my pc... Thanks for your help

It loads from a run key in the registry, use the MS office add/remove programs (not the Windows one) and you can pull it off. Office does not allow you to choose whether to install it during the initial install.

Try This:

click Start, Run, type MSCONFIG, click OK.

when a new window opens up....
Click the Startup tab on the top-right. Uncheck findfast and any other proggy you're tired of seeing started when windows boots.

click ok... etc. restart

tada! should work fine now

If you want to uninstall it, you have to do the following:

Add/Remove Programs
Select Office97
There should be a custom install option, click that.
Click Office Tool in the list, click the Details button
FindFast is on that list. Uncheck it and click all the OKs, Nexts and crap. Restart and, biggity bang, no FindFast crap.
