This is probably the easiest thing for you guys to fix but for some reason the scan disk and defrag on my system aren't working-I've shut down VIRTUALLY everything running in the background and I still cant seem to get them to run. (the scandisk only scans about 4 files before it restarts,I couldnt get it past 4 for over an hour till I finally gave up-). The defrag of course hasn't got past 0%. any suggestions? I really need to defrag as It's not been done in like a month. HELP!

What else is still running in the background? (You said virtually everything, not everything)

Does scandisk stop at the same point, regardless of how advanced or simple you run it?

Which fails, the scandisk or the defrag? or both?
Have you tried the DOS scandisk?

try this:

reboot to Windows safemode (yes, it the defrag process will take longer, but it might actually work instead of failing)

if you don't know how, just restart, and kep tapping the F8 key (before windows Starts to load) until you get a menu. Select option #3.

Once you are in safemode, make sure you screen saver is disabled by going and re-selecting <none> for the scr.saver and clicking apply/ok.

Now, press Ctrl+Alt+Del *ONCE* (together). this will bring up a little window with a list of program names. If you ony have systray and Explorer listed, simply click cancel. If you have anything else listed, select the name of the program and click End Task. Repeat this until you only have Explorer and Systray left.

Also, don't use animated mouse cursors.

now try to run scandisk and then defrag. it should work.

I just wanted to thank everyone for the help on the defrag/scan disc issue..HURRAY..problem solved. Nanotech you get a gold star from me..seems as though some TWIT in my home downloaded that sucky A.I.M off the web and that was running in the background all along..once I shut everything down in the ctrl/alt/del box..it ran fine. Thanks again.

Thumbs up

glad I could be of help. believe it or not, my original intent in signing up to the forums was to help out in the tech-support forum... unfortunately I ended up posting mainly in the off topic.
