WD 250 GB External Hard Drive Problem

I am transfering a bunch of music files from a WD external drive to another external hard drive which I bought last year. It's the first time I used it.

In Windows Explorer, as I am scrolling down the menu of songs in a file, it progresses rapidly and then at a snail's pace as it hits the middle of the page. It almost freezes. There are are 5 files with approx. 40 GB per file. There are no sub folders.

Is there a limitation in Explorer as to the size or number of files before it slows down? Or does this sound like a bad drive?

Is the target drive formatted NTFS? If it's FAT32, the maximum file size is 4GB (well, technically 4GB - 1).

I believe it's FAT32. How do I tell?

In Explorer, right click on the drive letter and choose "Properties". The file system will be displayed in the General tab.

I did not think you could (or would want to) use FAT32 on a drive of that size.

You're much better off with NTFS (unless you're going to want to access the drive from Windows 98 systems).

if they are both external drives, chances are you are overwhelming the USB bus a little, which could be part of the problem.

That sounds reasonable. I didn't think of that.
