Sister's Computer
She came home today and the wireless mouse starting acting weird. It was very slow and started grabbing things that it pointed at.
She replaced the batteries twice. I told her to try a standard mouse. Now neither the keyboard or the mouse is working. Her husband ran a virus and a spyware program before replacing the mouse. No viruses reported and twenty spyware issues. Still no cure. Her cable modem was flashing, so I told her to disconnect it from the computer. No cure. Obviously, she can't get into Task Manager to see what is running and what the CPU usage is. Any ideas? |

is it acting like this in Safe Mode as well?
Has she installed any new programs recently? What operating system is she running? Is Remote Desktop Assistance enabled if she's running Windows XP? if it is, disable that. |

Windows XP. The keyboard doesn't work and she can't get into Safe Mode. She has connected and reconnected the keyboard and rebooted.
Even turning the computer OFF/ON with the switch several times, it won't go into Safe Mode. which is weird. Occasionally, the mouse works for a couple of minutes and then starts dragging things when pointed at. Sounds like drivers have gotten messed up or something mechanical at the motherboard connections for the mouse and keyboard? |

I'm guessing you're helping her over the phone?
couple things... is her keyboard/mouse ps/2 or usb? if it's ps/2, does she have a spare usb? or vice versa? Does she have remote desktop enabled and another computer? if so, remote connect to that computer with the mouse/keyboard not plugged in. if the mouse/keyboard issues persist remoted it, it's more likely a software/virus type issue. if the issues disappear, then it's more likely a hardware issue. also, keyboard not functioning, i'm wondering if she/someone spilled anything on the keyboard.... |

Fixed it !!
I borrowed a USB keyboard and mouse. After it recognized it, I rebooted and everything worked. So I took a chance and installed the wireless mouse and keyboard and that worked. Before I installed the wireless setup, I checked the Remove Hardware icon and guess what, it shows four USB Mass Storage Devices. I checked My Computer and obviously nothing is showing. What the heck? These four drives are showing up under that icon each time it boots up. |

Glad you got those problems fixed. Does the computer have an integrated media card reader? Each media card reader slot will be recognized as a mass storage device. |
