FIOS and Router
Mu sister just got Verizon FIOS. Her husband was involved in a motorcycle accident right after that and can not go upstairs where the desktop computer is.
I told her to get him a laptop and use a router with a wireless card. However, the Verizon support guy said that the router or whatever is very expensive for FIOS. Is this true? |

This sounds very odd to me. I'm about to get FIOS, and they are including a modem with wifi built in. I'm surprised they would set up a non-wifi enabled new install.
Nonetheless, a basic $40 wifi router from fry's should work. Just pay the neighbor kid to set it up.

Your basic $40 router might only have a 10mbps WAN port (where the modem would connect to), which would make FIOS pointless.
I think routers like the Linksys WRT150N or D-Link DIR-655 have the capability to handle up to 100mbps on their WAN port, but they're a tad more expensive. Also, if you want the best speed, wireless-N routers are definitely better when you have a connection as fast as FIOS.

What if they aren't concerned about maximum speed? Will the $40 router work OK?
