Retrieving Drivers for Laptop

A guy I know inherited an older laptop. It may have Windows 98. I told him I can install Windows XP Pro.

Can I retrieve the drivers from the original OS and install them? If I can, should I put them on a floppy, a CD or what? And at what stage would I install them?

You may be able to find them on the Internet. I'd look there first. I'm willing to be that the drivers for 98 are different from the ones for XP.

Yes, for sure you'll need XP drivers - 98 drivers will not work on XP.

Install from an XP SP2 CD if you have one - that will already include MOST popular drivers. For the rest you'll have to dig around on the mfr's website.

most video cards will allow you to use a generic driver just to get you started. but for any sort of acceleration you will need the actual manf driver.
