My PC can't find my HP EX475 in the install
I'm trying to install my HP EX475 server and it was going smoothly until the Windows Home Server Connector ran.
It cannot find my server when it searches for it. I connected the server to Port 1 of my router and my PC is connected in Port 2. There's a light behind the connection on my server. I'm running Avast Pro, but currently have it turned off. It still can't find the server and HP Support is subpar for explanation... Help, please! Thanks so much...

kevs, can you ping either computer from the other computer? What are their IP addresses? Are they in the same range? Also, what OS is the server running?

I don't know the IP address of the server because I'm trying to set it up... I guess, since my desktop is XP Pro, the server is running on XP Pro? That brings up another question then...if my eventual goal is to phase out this desktop to have my home completely wireless, should I do the intial software install on my new laptop? |

Stick to getting it working wired first then go to wireless networking. Are you able to get online with the server?

Okay, this is where I'm a total newb...I don't even know if it can be wired... I've got a buddy who's most likely going to Remote Connect into my computer to help me, but he suggested that a reason why it might not find the server is because I upgraded the RAM from 512MB to 2GB before I even turned it on for the first time. He said that it might not find it because the server OS might be asking me to setup the new configuration with the upgraded RAM. Is that feasible? |

Sure. Are you trying to get the server connected without using a monitor or anything? That can be tricky, especially if like your friend suggested, if your computer is telling you that there is more RAM installed. Is your other computer a Desktop or a laptop? If it is a desktop, connect the monitor, keyboard, and mouse to the never server and get it set up first. Make sure it is can connect to the internet, then try to connect to it from you other computer.

Yes, I'm trying to connect without using a monitor. I totally understand how it can be tricky, but HP's whole thing is that it's a cinch to set-up...yeah, ssssuuurreeee it is.... Quote:
My computer that I'm first trying it on is a Desktop. I will try to connect the monitor, keyboard, and mouse to the never server and see if I can get it set up. Yeah, my buddy was telling me to put the original 512MB back and then upgrade after everything is set up...what a pain... Thanks for the continued input! ![]() |

First things first: Is your router set up to use DHCP to give each PC an IP address? It needs to be set up this way for the Windows Home Server to work.
The EX475 is a Windows Home Server computer -- it's based on Windows Server 2003, rather than XP Pro. Furthermore, HP doesn't support adding more memory to the server (which you may have discovered after seeing how hard it was to access the RAM modules in the first place). One thing you can try doing is to click Start > Run, then type "cmd" (without the quotes) and press ENTER. From the command prompt, type the following: ping HPSERVER You should get a response from it. If you get an error that Windows cannot find "HPSERVER" then there's either a network issue, or it's not even booting up (might be hard to tell, since I'm not sure if this server even has a VGA output.

Thanks for all the help. After some troubleshooting, I discovered it was my wonderful VOIP box that was blocking the port that the server runs on.
I'm currently trying to cancel my VOIP. It's time to go cell-phone only! ![]() Thanks again, everyone! |
