Installed new CPU fan and want to know ideal temp
I am running a Pentium 4 at 3.2ghz with hyper-threading. I changed out the stock cpu fan and teh case fan. I installed a Zalman 9700 cpu fan and a Silenx case fan. I used Artic Silver instead of the stuff that came with the Zalman fan. I didn't look at the temp before the switch but with the new fans I am running at 55 C at idle....ambient is like 70 ish F.
What program do you guys recommend I use to monitor my CPU temp? Thanks.

Those Prescotts had the nickname of "space heater" for a reason!
That said, how much thermal paste did you use between the processor and Zalman heatsink? (the heatsink you got is fairly reasonable for an air cooler).

I didn't go nuts. Maybe a little less than pea sized drop on the cpu and then another one on the heat sink.

That's probably the issue right there - you only need to apply it to the CPU itself.
You want to apply a small drop right in the middle of the processor's heat spreader (about the size of an uncooked grain of rice). Then, install your heatsink (making sure to apply pressure straight down). Also, Arctic Silver does have a curing time (roughly 200 hours or so), and it can help to power down the system at night for a couple of nights as well. More information can be found HERE (documents in PDF format). |

Yeah, that has to be a Prescott - those run crazy hot. Keep an eye out for a Northwood 3.4 or EE. I had a 3.4 that idled at about 32°c.

Are you saying I can swap out my processor with a Northwood 3.4 or EE?

Yeah - if you have a 3.2HT in there now that's running hot, it's a probably a 478 pin Prescott. Northwoods & 478 pin EE procs will fit in there too.

Those can be rather expensive due to their age. Sometimes you can get a used one, otherwise it might cost the same to buy a cheap motherboard and a Pentium D.

My cpu is a LGA 775. You sure I can use a 478 pin Prescott?

Curious what motherboard you are using.

Ooh! Sorry man, bad assumption on my part. You're a generation ahead of the Northwood. The good news is that there are a lot of cheaper, more recent procs available for LGA 775 than socket 478. Depending on your MB, you might even be able to move up to a dual core pretty cheaply. You need to find a better description of your MB - there were tons of different Asus boards that started with P5. If you can find a better model number, search here and it'll list the compatible processors. |

Asus P5...it also uses AGP instead of PCI express.

P5P800...I don't think I can use the dual core.
