sounds like a virus or spyware. i would reboot your system with your antivirus set to scan at boot and let it run through its processes

Are they getting sent somewhere else? Have you tried searching the computer for the file?

where are you saving from?
saving from a browser?
saving a text file in notepad?
saving a word doc in word?

if it's just your browser, then, i'd think spyware, something in the browser is screwed up (plugin for saving files that you forgot about), or possibly a virus.
if it's every single app, then i'd think it's a virus.

Is your computer set to hide system files? Maybe an incorrect file type was set to be hidden also.

The old IE used to do that if your cache/temp. internet files needs to be emptied.

Can you go to the directory you're trying to save to and create a new folder? Just to check if you have write permissions.

I found the problem.
Free space = 0.0 GB.

Well yes free space might be the biggest issue.

If you use vista you may need to right click to enable admin rights,

and secondly, you can scan you comp with Home Avast antiviral scanner.

It is one of the best and it is Free!

Is it possibly your pop up or program blocker is preventing the pop up box that asks you where you want to save the file?
Like does it say where to save and fails to save? Or you click a link and nothing happens?

it goes thru the motion of saving. meaning the box pops up, it asks for where i want it to save to, and it has a status bar and all that. but when it's done, and i go looking for the file, it's not there

at least, that's the case when i use firefox
